How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After receiving and spending all the transfers, I am glad that all have been working well in my household. My family has progressed so well in many areas. At the moment, I am planning to start buying and selling eggs and ropes collected from the immediate community. This is a business I once tried and has been profitable, especially buying the eggs at a wholesale and selling out in pieces.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well right from the enrollment, where the process was fair to every villager. We were all treated equally from the initial meeting to our homes, where we enrolled and given phones only when we needed one. From the start to the end, I have no complaints and can attest to the fact that everything was satisfactorily conducted.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20000 of the first transfer on buying a heifer that I am currently rearing with the herd I already had, hoping to increase milk production in the future. This will come in handy in paying my three children's school fees. I also spent KEs 10000 on buying two sheep that I am diligently rearing at the moment with an intent to sell out their offspring in the future to provide both the household needs and also meet the school requirement for my children. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on meeting the medical bill when my husband visited the hospital for his chronic eye ailment that later led to an operating procedure. I am grateful for the significant support and hope to see all the projects yielding the expectations we had from the start.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 6 pm and I was at my kitchen garden picking up vegetables for supper. I had my phone in my pocket but I did not hear it ringing. I saw the SMS bearing the good news later when I was preparing supper for my family. I was so happy and I could not believe that I had KES 55000 in my mobile money account. I immediately shared the good news with my husband and children and they were so happy on hearing about it. We gave thanks to God and GiveDirectly for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that we managed to add two more cows to the ones that we have and we bought more chickens. The cows that we bought when they calve are going to be a great help to us since we will be able to get more milk for sale hence more income. The chickens that we bought have started laying eggs and hence my egg production has increased thus more income that is helping in meeting the small household needs like buying sugar, salt, etc.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on buying two cows. We bought them at KES 20000 each. We usually rear cows and sell some of the milk to earn a living. We hence decided to add the two so that we could increase our milk production and hence more income that we can use on making other developments. We also spent KES 4000 buying a bag of maize for our consumption and I also bought 3 chickens at KES 350 per chicken. I also usually rear some chickens for eggs that I usually sell to get some extra income. Apart from selling milk and the eggs, I also usually buy ropes at the market and sell them. The money that I make from the sales most of it usually goes to the purchase of food for my family and buying other essential household goods. My husband is not able to work since he is usually sickly. I am hence the breadwinner of the family. With the remaining amount of money, I used it in buying clothes for the children. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has been to be a large scale farmer .Crop and livestock farming is the main economic activity in this area .This activities contributes majorly to our livelihood in terms of food, asset ownership and income generation.I am glad that this transfers will fulfill my dream because I will buy 2 oxen. These oxen will facilitate my farming activities during ploughing, planting and also in transporting farm yields during harvest season .These oxen will cost me an approximate amount of KES 35000 each .
What is the happiest part of your day?
The availability of rainfalls in this area late last year and early this year has brought happiness in my life. This makes me happy because we have been able to plant crops and they are doing well in the farms. With these conditions we expect good harvest and hence a food secure future for the household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a mother of 4 and my husband is not strong health wise.Because of his health condition I have became the breadwinner of the family.I struggle to meet all the family needs because from my work of plaiting ropes I earn an average of KES 150 a day.Thi amount is inadequate as compared to my family needs such as food and medicines which amounts to KES 300 daily.I have ran into several debts because of limited incomes and this worries me alot.
