How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to save some money to start a new business. I will be buying goats from the farmers and selling them at a higher price at the market. This will be an additional source of income to meet the basic needs of the family including paying school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The majority of the people in the village were able to build better houses. Most used to live in small grass-thatched houses and they were not able to purchase the building materials. Besides that, some invested in dairy-keeping projects. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $220 on purchasing four goats. This is the best investment that I have always wished to start. Goats reproduce twice per year and really multiply faster. I will sell them to pay school fees for my children and invest some in my business. I spent $150 on purchasing a heifer. Sometimes I would buy milk, This is so costly for me since I do not have a steady source of income. I spent $15 per month on milk. I will get enough milk for the family when they give birth in the next few months. This will enable me to save money for other household basic needs. The remaining amount of money I added to my business of butchery that I run in town. I am so grateful because I can now break even and sometimes make good profits. It had gone down due to the high rate of dependency on meeting the basic needs of the family. I am grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had so many plans after enrollment that receiving a confirmation message from the first transfer excited me a lot. It was around 4:00 PM as I was still out at the nearby shopping center where I had been running my butchery shop. I was with my spouse at that moment and the news hit her ears with the same excitement as it did mine. Since all the plans were in place, we had no hurry to collect the money on that same day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is the improved living standard after boosting both livestock farming and the business I had been running. I have so far realized a better profit margin and also customer satisfaction since they are always getting quality service and the products from my butchery.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The art of investing n livestock and selling them out later when the market prices are favorable has been a great saving technique for my household. The piece of land that my family sis on came by when I sold the livestock that I previously had and made a complete payment after topping up the income with the small savings I had. On receiving the first transfer, I spent KES 40000 on buying 7 sheep that I am hopeful will soon multiply and be of help when the need arises. I also had to inject KES 10000 into my current business and I am glad that the impact has been very distinct in that the profit margin increased, and the availability of mutton to my customers had been consistent. I later spent the remaining KES 4500 on buying a solar panel and lighting equipment that has eliminated the cost of fuel that we were previously incurring. The investment is viable enough to change my family's future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am separated from my wife for some time now and I live alone. I have worked hard until I bought 0.8 acres of land and it has been my ambition to buy a cow and sheep for keeping. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 55000 to purchase them. This will be my source of income in the future. I am glad that my long-time dream will be fulfilled.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I managed to purchase a cow that is yet to calve from the little savings I had made. This has brought joy into my life and it has motivated me to work even harder.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. I have a butchery in the nearby town however capital has been a challenge. I needed to increase the number of goats I slaughter in a day due to increased demand, however, I do not have surplus money to purchase goats in advance and this has limited my potential for increased profit-making that would have changed my living standard to a happy life.
