How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to start selling fish and vegetables in my village. For years, I have been making and selling charcoal which was not profitable and was a tedious one. Therefore I feel it's high time I transition and I believe I will grow financially. My spouse and I will not have to struggle in meeting our family's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job, especially on the teachings concerning cash transfers. A good number of us were not conversant with the Mpesa platform therefore I must mention that they helped us a lot. I do not see any sector that needs to be adjusted even as they move to the next village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a fraction of my second transfer on buying new bedding which includes, a wooden bed and two mattresses. These had to be a priority because I have been sleeping on the floor for quite some time and the experience was not good at all. Sometimes, I could fail to perform my daily duties because of the pain that I have been undergoing. I now feel relieved for finally being able to sleep on a decent bed ever since I were born. Later on, I cleared fees of $330 for my two children in secondary school. I use to pledge that I would pay the money on time but it never happened because ody status. Therefore all the teachers could no longer trust me which affected my children since they were on and off. I am thankful for finally being able to clear the arrears for the whole academic year. They will study comfortably without any disturbances. I am however certain that their performance shall improve. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my eight family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 2 PM when I was just sitting thinking about where I would get the money to buy food for my kids. Suddenly, I heard a message tone from my mobile phone. I asked my spouse to check who it was since we were not expecting to hear from anyone. Upon going through the messages, he realized that they were from GiveDirectly alerting us that we had received our first cash transfer. I felt extremely happy together with my family knowing that I would finally own goats.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I now have goats that I am keeping on my homestead. Having them in my life has made me hopeful and ambitious. I settled for them because they reproduce and grow very fast as compared to other domestic animals. Therefore it's an assurance that I will have many of them within a short period. As they multiply I plan to send my children to higher institutions including the four who are still in primary schools. For them to get a better education is my goal since I knew it will transform their lives and their future generation. My spouse and I have been relying on meagre jobs to raise the six kids which have never been easy. I am now a happy mother for finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel, gratitude to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28000 of my first transfer on paying fees for my daughter who is in form two, and my son who is pursuing a mechanical course. This has to be a priority because their future meant a lot to me and I would wish any of my kids to undergo what I went through because of illiteracy. They have been on and off due to the arrears which used to stress me a lot because it was dragging them behind academically. I now feel relaxed and happy to have cleared their whole academic year. They will study peacefully without any distractions hence good performance. Also, I bought four goats which cost KES 13000. These will be the only assets that I will rely on on in case of any financial difficulty more so my children's school fees. I later bought a mattress at KES 5000 for my two sons to replace the mats that had even worn out. At least they are now sleeping comfortably without any suffering. With the remaining amount of money only, I bought food for my eight family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me secure better education for my children. As a parent, I value the education of my children especially when I see other educated children getting good jobs and help improve the lives of their families. This has been just wishes for non of my children went passed primary school.Currently, my two youngest children are in standard eight. It has been my wish to ensure they get secondary education. My hopes are made valid by GiveDirectly. The transfers are coming at a time when my children will have done their Kenya Certificate For Primary Education(KCPE). With the first transfers, I will be able to take my children to schools of their choice.Besides, I sleep on an old-rugged mat. Nights are always awful.I would wish to spend KES 10 000 of the transfers to purchase a bed and a mattress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been relying on substance farming for food. For almost one year, we did not receive rains. This has contributed to a difficult life since getting even green vegetables from the farm was impossible. Two months ago, rains started and as per now, we have been able to plant maize and cassava. Seeing we are going to have food in plenty in few months has brought us happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband, who does casual jobs in house construction, cannot afford to provide for all the needs of my family of five children. He brings home about KES 200 a day which is not enough for three meals a day besides paying school fees. We have been living a hopeless life with no one to look upon.
