How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving my transfer, my main goal was to provide quality education for my 7 children who are still schooling. I have two in secondary and the others in primary school. In addition, I had wish to own a local dairy cow so that I may start a small-scale dairy farming a reliable source of livelihood for the family. This is because the charcoal vending job that I had depended on did not earn me enough money to support all the basic needs of my family. I am thankful for the transfer that has helped me in achieving most of my desires. My new goal is to construct a separate house for my children this is because they are grown up and are living in a small grass-thatched house which is not comfortable for them. The space is too small for them to do their homework in the evening after school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in targeting and helping the poor households in the community. In addition, all the households were visited and given an equal chance to participate in the program without any discrimination. I do not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With 7 children still schooling and without a permanent job, providing for their education has been the biggest challenge for me. This is because my job of charcoal vending did not earn me enough income to comfortably meet the basic needs of the family of 10 members. After receiving the transfer, I spent KES 25000 to pay part of the fee arrears. Furthermore, I spend KES 15,000 to buy a heifer, this was for starting a small-scale dairy farming an alternative source of income to supplement my earnings from charcoal vending. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to purchase enough foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 o'clock I was at my house brushing my teeth preparing for my daily work of charcoal burning. I heard a message notification on my phone, I was eager to know the content of the message since I was not expecting any message at that time. After verifying, I discovered that I had received my transfer. I immediately informed my spouse and the children about the good news. We felt very happy for receiving our transfer. I had a lot of needs to attend to however, I lacked finances.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that my kids are learning without being discontinued due to school fees. This has restored the peace of mind, I am no longer worried about the future of my kids. In addition, I have an investment for their education after purchasing 2 cows with the help of my transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to support my 2 children's educational needs who are in secondary school. I used KES 20,000 to clear the fee arrears for the previous term. Similarly, I spent KES 2000 to pay for the other 5 kids who are still in primary school. I also used KES 22000 to purchase two indigenous dairy cows this was a future investment for the family. This is because I had desired to start livestock rearing but I lacked capital. They will help me in educating my kids at the college level once they complete secondary school. I used the remaining amount to obtain enough food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an improved living standard to my household. This is because I rely on casual labor-charcoal burning business which is tiresome, labor-intensive, and earns at most Kshs.1,200 per week which is not enough for my needs. I plan to spend a portion of the transfer to pay school fees for my children so that they get education. I will also spend Kshs.37,000 to buy two indigenous cows and ox plough that I will hire to my neighbors to earn a living. The remaining amount will help me cater to other basic needs such as food and medicine.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I get enough time to rest and share meals with my family. Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when my children are away at school while I am busy in the forest preparing logs to burn charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is food insecurity. This is because I depend on the charcoal burning business which earns me an income that is not sustainable for my family. Due to this, I have been struggling to get food for my family. Sometimes, I am spending the whole day without food. Something that affects the education of my children.
