How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving these transfers is that there are no more financial struggles in my life as before. This is because I only depended on a small income from casual work which was very inconsistent and very little before the transfers. I could not even meet my daily needs comfortably with my income. This is why I have decided to start a business so that I don't have to struggle as I used to. I used to borrow a lot from friends and ended up having so many debts which I could not pay on my own. I would struggle to pay my rent in time because I rarely had money. Ever since I started receiving these transfers, I have always had something even to save unlike before the transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to start a business. I have been saving part of my transfers and I will still save part of the transfers so that I can have a business. I have always desired to have a reliable source of income but I could not get because I am not well educated. I could not even get a loan to start a business and that is why I have decided to save so that I can finally achieve my goal of starting a business
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying my house rent. I have been depending on my income from construction job to pay the rent before the transfers and it was a struggle. I have never been at peace with my landlord because I am always late with payments. I am glad since I started receiving the transfers, I have never been late with my rent payments. The rest of the transfer I have saved. I have been saving even with the previous transfers so that I can start a business. I have relied on a construction job for long and I feel it is time I improve my financial life through a business.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, there is a lot of peace in my house especially between me and my wife. In the past, we used to have very petty quarrels on financial usage because we used to disagree on our priorities. Again, we had very little to spend and that was the main issue why we used to quarrel. Ever since we started receiving these transfers, we have managed to solve most of our daily needs in time and as a result, the little quarrels we had with my wife are no more. We have some money to spare after our daily needs and this has helped us grow and even agree on investment issues. My life is now much better because of the transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My only goal, for now, is to continue saving my transfers so that I can reach my goal of starting the salon part of the business. I have a target which I am working on and when I will have met the target, I will withdraw the money and use it to start the business by buying equipment and stock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on savings which I will use in expanding my barbershop business. I would not only want to have a barbershop business but also have salon business in the same premise. This is why I am saving my transfers so that I can start the salon part of the business to help me increase my income and utilise the space I have rented effecticvely.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from the way it would have been had I not received the transfer in that currently, I can pay for the house rent on time. Previously it was a real struggle to pay for house rent on time which made me be in a bad relationship with my landlord because he could lock my family out of the house every time I failed to pay him on time. I'm happy I no longer experience the embarrassment of my household members being locked outside the house by the landlord for not paying rent on time.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I'm an orphan and I have many siblings whom I'm currently taking care of. This has drained me financially to an extent that I haven't been able to construct a house back in the rural home. I, therefore, have an additional goal of opening up a business with the current transfers thereafter I'll use the income I'll be earning from it to construct a house back in the rural.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm currently relying on casual work which is not reliable and at the same time, the income I earn from it is too low. I, therefore, have been saving part of the transfers including the recent transfer so that I can use it in the future to open up a cyber cafe so that I can have a reliable source of income. In addition to that, I had not paid for the house rent. I, therefore, used a portion of the money to pay for the house rent.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal is to open a barber shop. I have been saving part of my transfers in table banking and I will use the savings to start this business. It will a source of income to pay school fees for my siblings and also provide their basic needs. I will also save the income from the business and use it to build a new house in my rural home. Currently, we are living in a small house and cannot accommodate all my family members comfortably.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer struggle to pay rent as I used to do in the past. Every month after receiving my transfers, I use part of it to pay rent. In the past I have been struggling to pay rent because the money I got from casual jobs was little and could not cater all my basic needs and also support my siblings. I have also saved part of my transfers in table banking and I will use the savings to open a barber shop. The income from the business will be enough to pay school fees for my siblings.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I saved part of my recent transfer in table banking. Since I started receiving my transfers, I have been saving part of it every month because I am planning to open a barber shop. Currently, I am depending on casual jobs to meet my basic needs and pay school fees for my siblings since my parents passed away when we were very young. The money I get from casual jobs is little and cannot meet all the basic needs for my siblings. Starting this business will therefore be a source of income to pay school fees and provide basic needs for my siblings. I also used part of transfer to pay rent since I received the money at a time when I had not paid rent.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was three o'clock in the morning when I received Mpesa notification message that I have received money from Give Directly. I was so happy since I knew that I will fulfill my dream of opening a barber shop.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
From business I will get good money to improve and sustain my life. I don't have a house in my rural area and when I travel there I find a hard time not having somewhere to sleep with my family. I want to educate my children for them to have a good life in future.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is unemployment because not being employed means I do not have money and can not afford day to day needs and I stressed up, this might lead to people engaging in crime activities, so that's why being employed is important to me.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to be a stable businessman because right now in Kenya having a business is better than being employed and its easier to grow and improve my life.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
On my usual day I go hustling for construction jobs in Eastleigh area Nairobi town as well as other places where I can find a job. On my free time I mostly visit my friends, go to church for group sessions or I might just stay indoors to relax
