How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different that it would have been if I never received the transfer in the, the transfer has empowered my life. I am now self reliance after starting the livestock rearing through the purchased of 3 cows. Second, I bought proper beddings and at the moment, I enjoy sleeping comfortable at night this is because I use to sleep on the floor using old sacks. In addition, I obtained 2 doors for the house since it had no doors which was risk and I was always worried there dangerous creature might enter the house at night.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving unconditional cash to the poor households in the community. This has transformed the lives of many households since they have the right to choose on how to spent their aid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My wish had been to start livestock rearing but I lack the financial capacity to fulfill the desire. The moment I received the transfer I prioritized fulfilling my dream by purchasing 3 cows for $560 after adding some money which I have save from my first transfer. This is my reliable source of income since I already have the experience in rearing them. I will be able have enough milk supply for the family and to the extra to any a living.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was heading to the dam when my mobile phone started vibrating continuously. Since I am illiterate I decided to go back home so that I can get some help. Upon arriving home, one of my sons decided to check the content of the message only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GIveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy for getting such a huge amount of money which is non-refundable.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a dairy cow that I purchased from the financial support from GiveDirectly. I have been aspiring to keep them in my compound but I could not afford it since the money that I used to earn from the casual jobs was very little it was not even enough for the family's basic needs. I settled on purchasing the cow because it has various benefits compared to other domestic animals. One I will be getting milk for free which some will be for the family's consumption and the remaining liters I will sell to the nearby markets and generate an income. Apart from that, I will be getting manure which will make my farm productive. Previously I used to buy artificial ones from agrovets which were expensive and sometimes harmful to the crops. I am now glad because I am assured of harvesting a lot. I could not have achieved all these if it were not for the financial support from this organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some bedding which includes a new wooded bed and a mattress. Previously I used to sleep on some old mats as beddings. Also, I bought a dairy cow which will be the living assets that I will depend on just in case I will have any financial constraints. With the remaing amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs that will take us to the next harvesting season. I am glad now my children can at least take two meals a day.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow who is doing subsistence farming. My ambition has been to have a long-term investment like livestock keeping but due to financial challenges, this dream has never come to pass. Receiving this money means fulfilling it. I am planning to spend 60,000 shillings to purchase a pair of oxen and an ox plough. This is going to generate income for my family because I will hire them out to till other people's land during rainy seasons. In 1 acre I can make 2000 shillings, this amount is enough to cater for all my basic needs such as food. Other than that, I will use the extra amount to seek proper medication in referral hospitals. I was bitten by a chameleon 10 years ago in my right hand and I have never been cured despite visiting several clinics.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is my happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I have enough time to rest. Unlike in the daytime when I have a lot to do such as tilling my land. These tasks affects my hand which was beaten by a chameleon hence making it more painful.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Sickness is my biggest challenge. I was bitten by a chameleon 10 years ago on my hand. I have been visiting several hospitals seeking medication but all this has been in vain. Sometimes the pain persists to an extent that I can not perform any task. This has hindered me from meeting my basic needs such as food and specialized treatment.
