Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a normal morning for me and I was checking on my cattle when at about 9 a.m, I received a message. On checking my phone, I realized that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. It was a wonderful surprise that made me so happy because I could finally meet my family's basic needs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am appreciative of the fact that this transfer has enabled me to meet my family's needs. We have bought foodstuff, and can now afford to have three meals a day, as opposed to just two, like before. My two children have new clothes that replaced the old, tattered ones. As a mother, it warms my heart to see them have their sense of dignity back. We also have proper lighting in our home, thanks to the solar panel that we installed. I couldn't be more thankful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In my village, most of us do not have access to electricity. I thought a solar panel would be helpful to us as a family, regarding having proper lighting.so I spent KES 13,500 on the installation of one. I also spent KES 5,000 on paying school fees for one of my two children, so she can stay in school and learn. Also, my children's clothes had become worn out so I spent KES 5,000 on buying some new ones. Lastly, I spent KES 10,000 on buying maize and beans, to ensure we had enough food for the household. It's amazing how much this transfer has done for us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an increased source of income. We have always been depending on my husband's income for upkeep which I feel is inappropriate. My husband works as a police officer in a far region and we entirely depend on him. I intend to have a diversified source of income and improve my household. I intend to buy a dairy cow of approximately Ksh 30,000 from the Give Directly's transfer. I will then spend the remaining cash to improve my house by purchasing furniture. Having a dairy cow will help us earn some cash through the sale of milk and lessen our reliance on my husband's income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My normal day entails spending the morning hours working in our 2acres of land which is within the village where maize is grown. I usually weed, dig, or fence to avoid other livestock from destroying our crops. I spend my afternoon hours doing other household chores and later fetch firewood in the evening. I feel more relaxed and happy in the evening because this is the time my husband is also free and we can call and chat with each other. This makes evening the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints have been the biggest hardship we faced in life. My husband is a police officer and he is currently servicing the loan which he took some years back to buy land. What he earns as a salary has not been enough to cater to the entire family. Owing to this, we have debts which we have been borrowing from the village members to meet the recurrent expenses of the household. We, therefore, intend to buy a dairy cow and use the produce from milk to settle some debts and meet other School expenses.
