How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to build a shop. I want to build the shop because I live by the roadside. There are a lot of people living around and the shops are few. I hence see a business opportunity that will enable me to get more income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing well by constantly calling us to check on us. They called us before we got the transfers and they taught us how to safeguard our money. They have also been calling us after we got the transfers and this is good because it shows that they care. I do not see anything that they need to change in their way of work. I would like to urge them to keep up the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my entire recent transfer on buying a cow. I decided to buy a cow because I wanted to invest in something that is going to help me even in the future. After all, the transfers from GiveDirectly were only being sent twice. I had another cow and hence I decided to add another so that I could get more milk. The cow that I bought has calved and I have a plan to sell some of the milk and use the money in paying school fees for my two children. I was not able to buy the cow before because I did not have enough money. I am thus grateful to GiveDirectly because, with the transfer, I was able to achieve my goal.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I underwent heart surgery after becoming sick for a long time and it was during one of the visits when I saw an incoming message. On reading it, my heart was filled with happiness as it was a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I immediately removed my face mask due to excitement and the doctor had to remind me that I should put it on since I was at the hospital. Receiving this money meant a lot to me due to the financial challenges that I was facing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a teacher and have so many documents that I had been keeping them under the mattress since I did not have any secure place to keep them. With the transfer, I was able to purchase a cupboard that can be locked. This has made my life different since I have been able to keep all of my important documents in one of the drawers hence I no longer have to worry about them getting damaged. In addition to this, my utensils are ever clean and the damages have reduced since we keep them in a drawer unlike before when we used to keep them in a carton.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had completed the construction of a more decent and spacious house for my family before receiving the transfer and had started living in it though I had not fully furnished it. It was very cold at night since the walls are made of timber and there were some tiny spaces at the joints. On receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 7500 to buy some plywood for the wall and I am happy that we now live in a very warm house. Also, I spent KES 5000 to clear fee arrears for my children, KES 12000 to buy a cupboard, and KES 15000 to buy new poles to use in fencing my farm since the existing fence had collapsed and my livestock had been destroying my crops. In addition to this, I used KES 2500 to construct a shade for the water tank that I had already bought, KES 9200 on clothes, a blanket, and a three-seater seat, KES 2000 to buy drugs that the doctor had prescribed them for me after my check-up and used the remaining KES 4300 on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My health hasn't been so stable for the last twelve years. I was diagnosed with a heart condition that necessitated a surgery and ever since I have been in and out of hospital severally and all this time I have been spending up to US$600 a year. My church members have been supporting me most of the time to raise this amount. Going forward I would like to spend half of these transfers to start a poultry farm which will earn me approximately US$100 monthly so that I can be able to support my medical bills. The other half I'll save so that in case of an emergency in my medical condition and a huge amount of money is needed to restore my health I'll be able to pay for it myself.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is usually in the morning when I am preparing my child for school. To see my child always happy and excited for school gives me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I was diagnosed with this heart condition the doctors recommended that I shouldn't burden myself with a lot of work and in this place you must toil hard to get life going. My husband abandoned me and married a second wife and I was depressed about it though I have recovered. So having a weak body and being abandoned by my husband has been the biggest hardship.
