How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Besides being a tailor, I am also a farmer. In the coming year and beyond, I am planning to hire a piece of land as the one I have is smaller in size. I will be hiring labour so as to save on the time wastage. I have been doing it with the help of my family members who are only available in the evenings, and it could take us a whole month to complete an acre of land. In addition to this, I will be opening up a new business of groceries to be operated by my wife. The business will specifically be taking care of the family's basic needs like food and clothing.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
n my opinion, what Give Directly does so well is that they give out unconditional transfers, different people have different needs and therefore it would be of no importance if the transfers had any restrictions on the spending patterns. The transfers are given in lump sum amounts and this helps in planning purposes in terms of the developments that we would wish to engage in at a personal level. Unlike other projects where it is given in small amounts. To avoid household conflict, what needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents. Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a tailor by profession. The profits I get from my business has never been enough since I have so many responsibilities to take care of. Before the transfer, I never had a modern house, I owned a small grass-thatched house which was leaking during the rainy season. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as I managed to build a two-bedroom modern house for kshs 30,000 Initially, I never had peace of mind as it was so tiresome moving some of my valuable items during the rainy season, my young boys too never had adequate space to spend their nights and this was so stressful as they could sleep in a neighbour's house. My peace of mind is finally restored since I built a house. I am a University student, a third-year student studying English Literature. I used the remaining part of the transfers of kshs 23,000 to pay for my tuition fees

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can vividly recall that I was at home, It was early in the morning when I was still in bed when suddenly I heard my phone ringing. Upon checking my phone I noticed that I had received cash from GIvedirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because I knew that the transfer would transform our lives. I then broke the news to my wife who was overwhelmed with happiness. And lastly, we embarked on planning how we would utilise the transfer wisely.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was able to complete the construction of my house which had been left halfway due to financial constraints. I was almost on the verge of giving up but GiveDirectly gave me hope. I am grateful that I was able to complete it right on time. In addition to that, I was also able to furnish the house. GiveDirectly has lifted our living standard thus we are thankful for the unconditional transfer that brought a change in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I opted to build a decent house for my family. This is because I had started construction of a house before but unfortunately I was unable to complete it due to financial constraints. I work as a tailor, married and blessed with three children. Therefore I used KES 22,000 on completion, I then used KES 12,000 on purchasing a sofa set seats. Lastly, I used the remaining amount of the transfer on buying clothes and foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the support that lifted our living standards amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I started building my house in the year 2015 and up to now, it is still incomplete. It is a 3-roomed timber walled house with uncemented floor. The ceiling is also not fixed and no single chair is in the house as we speak. It is shameful to have visitors sit on a jerry can and I want to see an end to this. I am a tailor at Chebunyo market and I earn a daily income of KES 200 which I use to buy food for my family. That is why I have not been able to complete this project. I intend to use KES 30000 to finish building my house and another KES 15000 to buy seats. Receiving this money will give my house a new shape.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Four months ago a neighboring school gave me a job to create badges in their school uniforms. I earned KES 23000 which helped me buy food for my family and this is something that made me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is the biggest challenge that I face. I am a tailor at Chebunyo market and I earn KES 200-300 per day. With the high cost of living, this money is not sufficient to fully cater for the basic needs of my family like food and clothing. I have a family of 5 and I am the sole breadwinner. It is so heartbreaking to go home in the evening without buying anything for my family
