How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different that it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am now owning a decent house for myself. I will no longer had to walk for a long distance in order to borrow shelter from my neighbour. Likewise, I have my privacy something that I have lost for many years. In addition, I was able to start livestock rearing after spending $400 of the first transfer to purchase two cows. Furthermore, I am fetching more water using an oxen cart than earlier when I was carrying them on my head. This was tiresome considering that I was getting them from a long distance.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I thank the organization for supporting the less privileged households in society. Through the unconditional cash transfer. I was able to construct a house something that I could not have achieved without the aid. Coming up with the cash program is what GiveDirectly did well. In my opinion, I don't see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have desired to own a house for my self but I lacked the financial capacity to purchase the building materials. For all those years, I was sheltered by my neighbour. Every night I had to walk for one kilometer to my neighbour's house to spend my night there. I spent my transfer to purchase building materials including building poles, 14 irons sheets, tread, timber, and paid labor charges for the construction of my house. I also contributed $100 for the purchase of an animal-driven cart which we are using to fetch water. In addition to that sometimes we are hiring it out for a fee for light transport. With the remaining amount I bought enough food stock for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 Am when I preparing breakfast for my family when I heard my phone vibrating. Since I am illetrate I decided to ask for help from my children and on checking, they realized that it was an Mpesa from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I know I would achieve a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is that I now own a pair of oxen that I am currently rearing. I have been longing to have my own oxen for a long period of time, but due to my financial status, I could not afford it. Through the first transfer that I received, I now own my own oxen which have now changed my life entirely. They are now helping me in ploughing my farm, whereby they take less time and compared to when I used to do the exercise with my own hands. Secondly, I can now prepare my farm in good time compared to how I used to do. This is an assurance that I will be getting plenty of harvests. Thirdly I will be hiring them to my friends at a fee and get an income. The money will help me meet my family's basic needs with ease without straining.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some livestock such as a pair of oxen at a total of KES 40000. I opted in purchasing them becaus they will be of great help for my farming purposes. This has been my long time to own them but they were too costly, therefore I ended up hiring those of my neighbors in every planting season. I later bought some decent clothes for my children to replace the old ones which were old and torn. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm planning to use 450 dollars from this donation to construct a descent and a spacious two bedroom house for my family. I have been struggling with an incomplete house. Given that am a dirvocee, it has been difficult for me to complete my house. Furthermore, I'll use 300 dollars to buy two indegenous dairy cows for milk production both for domestic use and for sale. Buy doing this I'll be a happy woman.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I take a rest after a busy day struggling to put a meal on the table
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity. It has been difficult for me to afford a meal since I faced a divorce more than a decade ago.
