How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My greatest ambition would be to drill a borehole near my house. I know it's possible, and it would greatly improve both livestock and crop farming, as well as the overall quality of life for me and my guests. I could grow more crops and sell them with the water, increasing my income and allowing me to do more for myself, my children, and my grandchildren.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The fact that GiveDirectly works directly with recipients, with no middlemen or intermediaries, is where their strength lies. Because of GiveDirectly and what they have done for us, I feel empowered, respected, and heard. I hope they continue to bless others and to walk with us, with whom they have started numerous projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Iron sheets are quite expensive and were the main ingredient missing in my home-owning recipe. I grabbed 30 iron sheets as soon as the funds arrived, allowing me to construct a two-bedroom house with a living room, kitchen, and dining area. I also purchased a female heifer to help my farming efforts, which exceeded my wildest dreams. That will allow me to obtain milk and calves to sell. Clothing for myself had previously been a luxury, but I was able to obtain a few items that would help improve my self-image. Stocking up on food in the house was also important; since I'm the only one in the house, I need to make sure I can sustain myself. My daughter recently married and has three children, so she is preoccupied with her family. I despise being a burden, so making certain that I have everything I require gives me great comfort. I expanded my business, which consists of selling fried potato squares for $0.05 per piece, and made sure I had enough stock and float to keep it running for a while. Aside from that, I work on the 3 acres of land I inherited from my father and thank God for the assistance that GiveDirectly has provided to me and my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was doing my daily household chore when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes, It was a message confirming that I have received some money from GiveDirecly. I immediately inform my sister-in-law and she was so happy too. I knew I would be able to invest in the livestock-keeping project. I stayed for two weeks planning on how to spend the money. I am grateful for the support because it has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being in a position to purchase the building materials to renovate my house is the biggest difference in my daily life. We lived in a house with a dusty floor. We are being exposed to dust-related particles which might cause some respiratory-related diseases. It's not easy to maintain these houses. I have always wanted to cement the floor but I did not have the money. I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I would get through this is so small and I was not in a position to buy the materials. Currently, I have purchased all the necessary materials, and I mas still waiting for the workers to start the construction process. I am so happy because I will have a decent floor and I will not be worried like now. GiveDirectly has fulfilled my dream of owning a decent house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when it reproduces in the next few months. I will cut the daily cost of purchasing milk. I spent KES 7,500 on purchasing cushions, and KES 4,000 on purchasing a blender and household utensils. The remaining amount of money I spend on purchasing food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For such a long time I have been living in a house which was previously my mother's shop. I have been slowly constructing my house; 2 years now due to financial constraints. I am now happy because with this money I can be done with the house once and for all. I have roofing work to do and a lot of finishing. This will cost me not less than 35,000 KES. I have a business of selling fast foods just outside my house. My plan is to build a structure for this because I do it on open air. This will cost me around 20,000 KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter visited me last month. She did some shopping for me. This is what has made me happy recently. She is my only child and I am very proud of her. She supports me despite the fact that she has a family of her own.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The drought situation in this region has affected me a lot. This is because I can no longer depend on my farm to get income. This has got me into a financial crisis hence a lot of struggle to get food and money for my projects. I have not been able to complete the construction of my house for two years now due to financial problems.
