How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I usually depend on going to the market twice a week to sell grains. Even though the money that I usually get is not enough to cater to our basic needs for all the week, I am happy that I am able to support my spouse with our bills. Lands in my region have become small thus one cannot depend on crop farming alone. Due to this, I am planning to expand my current business of buying and selling grains so that I will fully help my spouse in meeting our basic needs while he concentrates on paying school fees for our five children in different levels of education so that none of them will drop out of school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by giving out unconditional cash transfers and I do not see anything they do not do well. With the transfer, people are able to meet their needs and goals according to their priorities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our family land is small and my eldest son had a plan to acquire a piece of land for himself after selling two of his dairy cows. Because of this, I decided to support him with KES 25000 from our second transfer and I am happy that I was able to support my son achieve his goal. To add to this, I spent KES 10000 to pay school fees for my children who had been sent back home, on KES 6000 on farming by hiring a tractor to till our land, and on the purchase of hybrid seeds and fertilizers and used the remaining amount on food and clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was cleaning the utensils, when I heard my neighbors celebrating that they have received the transfer. I went to check my phone inside the house. I got a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money. My family felt so happy because of this. We knew we would be able to buy a dairy cow. Which has always been my dream.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when my cow reproduce in the next few months. I buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs and small business of selling maize. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it's only for household items. I didn't had an extra income to purchase a dairy cow. Owning a cow has been my dream come true. Currently I have a heifer and this has given me hope and strength to work hard. I have devoted much of my time in taking care of the cow. I know in the next few months I will get enough milk for the family and be in a position to sell the surplus to earn an income. I will save the money to buy another dairy cow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when my cow reproduce. I used to buy milk daily and it is so costly for me. I spent KES 10,000 to pay school fees for my two children in secondary school. This made them to study well without being sent home. I bought sofa set seats because I didn't had before. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support it has changed my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better education for my children. I depend on subsistence farming for a living but unfortunately due to the unpredictable climatic changes, I haven't had enough produce in a couple of months to sustain my family , thus I resolved to casual laboring. I usually earn 20$ biweekly ,which is shared between household sustainance and paying school fees. I will use 200usd to facilitate their fees and 400usd to purchase a dairy cow .The milk produced will be used for the household and the extra to earn income as well.I will spend the rest of the transfers nonetheless on food .
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening .It is at this time that I have already earned from my casual job and I am able to purchase food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Struggling to pay school fees for my 5 children has been my biggest hardship. The money I earn from the casual jobs ( 20usd biweekly) cannot sustain both the household and school fees hence the children are at times forced to boycott school as I look for fees. This has made them lag behind in their education and I feel embarrassed.
