How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am happy to run a little grocery store in the neighborhood market area since it keeps me occupied and generates some revenue. The great demand for the product makes it more profitable, so my objective for this year is to increase it so that I can serve a large number of clients. This will guarantee me higher profits, which will ultimately raise the level of living for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Our area used to be known for its poverty, which could be seen in the housing conditions. This is no longer the case, however, since the majority of individuals have upgraded their existing homes. Giving us money with no conditions and not anticipating a refund made all of these things possible. The most notable aspect of the organization was its ability to financially empower people. They are doing an outstanding job, therefore neither I nor anybody else I know has ever complained about them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I invested $250 in a dairy cow in the hopes that after it gives birth, I will be able to receive milk for my family and for sale too. Three of our children attend school, and occasionally it can be difficult to pay their tuition. Our main source of income is their father, who rides a motorcycle, but his income is insufficient to meet all of our demands. Thus, we value your support and thank you for it. In addition, I contributed $240 to help build a new house. The previous one we had was too small to accommodate the five of us. Due to its modest size, sleeping arrangements were particularly difficult for us. Our children used to sleep in our old house, but now that we have another house, they do not. We now have peace of mind and privacy thanks to this. I bought some clothes for my kids and several tins of maize with the $35 I had left over.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am when I was checking my phone, little did I know there was a message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy when I saw the message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. It was one of the happiest days of my life. This is because I have never received such an amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy building materials and build a better house for my family. GiveDirectly came at the right time when we wanted to be helped. I am so grateful for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to purchase the iron sheet and poles and all the materials that were required to build a house is the biggest difference in my daily life. We lived in a small grass thatched house with my children. This was so demoralizing because whenever I had visitors there was no space to host them. During the rainy season, it was also a challenge because the house was leaking from the inside. We were being exposed to cold and this was so stressful. I was always worried because there was nowhere I could get the money to build a better house. I depend on small-scale farming and I run a small grocery business. The money that I would get through this was for food and clothes. I have no extra money. Currently, I am so grateful because I have a decent and spacious house for my family. I have peace of mind to conduct my daily activities without being stressed. Whenever I have relatives I no longer shy off like before. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 35,000 on purchasing building materials and I was able to build a better and more spacious house for my family. This is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. We lived in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. This was so embarrassing and stressful. Currently, I own a decent house and I no longer get worried. I spend KES 10,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when it reproduces in the future. The rest of the money I spend on food and household items that we were lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been dreaming of having a bigger house. Currently, we live in one grass-thatched house with our three children. It is getting old and too small to accommodate all of us including my teenage daughter who ideally should be having a separate room for herself. When I have visitors around, they have to go to their grandparent's house to sleep or I have to look for alternative accommodation for my visitors. I plan to use KES 40,000 to construct a three-roomed, iron-roofed house that will also help me collect clean rainwater for use. For the rest of the amount, I plan to purchase a dairy cow for milk production.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I first heard of Give Direct to being in the next villages three months ago. I was hoping and praying that our village will be among the villages to be visited. When they called for the community sensitization meeting I was overjoyed. Today is the happiest day, there is a glimpse of hope of my plans going through, through the help of giving Direct and this makes me so happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is a lack of finances. My husband who is now the sole provider is a motorbike rider in a different town far from home. So he has to cater for his own needs like accommodation and food before sending us money. I have stopped operating the grocery store I used to do when my eldest daughter became very ill that I had to take care of her. This also led to losing one of our sources of income. This also strains my husband a lot.
