How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am glad to have successfully spent my transfers on the most pressing needs including acquiring a motorcycle which is an additional source of income for my household. I bought it on credit and the plan is to pay 2500 KES weekly for one year to clear the debt. As I will be servicing the credit, I have an additional goal to start up a business selling both fruits and vegetables. These are basic needs that people can not do without. I am, therefore, hoping to earn a good profit from it that will boost in meeting my household needs as I service the loan.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am thankful for the unconditional support that we received from Give Directly that came with the freedom to spend on anything that we saw fit for our households. The process was fair because everyone was included in the project and through the support, people have managed to invest in various livelihood activities. I don't have anything to complain about the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had started constructing a brick house but I ran out of resources to complete it, so I left it halfway. When I received the second transfer I used 40000 KES to purchase some of the building materials for the construction. I am not yet done with the construction, but I am proud of the milestones. 15000 KES I paid for a deposit on a motorcycle which I bought on credit. I have assigned my son to operate the motorcycle, and he makes an average of 800 KES daily. With the amount he makes daily, we can save some as we service the credit which I am to pay 2500 KES daily for a year.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning, but didn't find out about the money until after having had breakfast when my son told me about the SMS confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I found out that I had gotten the money, like how I heard about all other people that had received before me, because that gave me the ability to do the great things that I couldn't do before. Especially, settling my son's school fees arrears and getting goats to keep at home. I was so happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to get the things I didn't have before, things that I desired for so long to have. The things that were on top of the list, were the goats that I was only able to get with the money I received from GiveDirectly. I am now so happy and proud, than I was before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 30000 on buying ten goats including the charges for the herder who guided the goats on foot to my home. I bought these goats because it had rained and grass was in plenty, and there was no chance that they could suffer for lack of grass. Also, having goats is an investment that will live on, since the breed I bought is one that can produce young ones twice or thrice a year. Therefore, within a few years, I'll have a lot of goats which I'll be able to sell one or two and address the financial challenges I will be facing in the future. Another reason for buying these goats is that they can persevere in dry climate conditions, therefore should rain cease, I know they will hold on until it rains again. This makes me so proud and confident. I also spent KES 10000 on settling my son's school fees arrears, because my son's education is my responsibility and believe that I also stand a chance of getting regular financial assistance from him in the future when he gets employed as a result of his good education. I strongly believe that education is the most important thing, that's why I made sure to settle my son's school fees arrears.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I believe education is the key to success. I have two kids who are in secondary schools. I will use my first transfer to pay for their school fees. For the rest, I will open a small kiosk in the compound to sell household items, with the profit I can cater for my basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been married for more than 20 years and I thank God we have been happily ever. This brings joy I can give an example to my kids to be like me with their future marriages.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have not been getting reliable rainfall for the last few years. Getting food and water is a challenge currently. We have to buy all these items and we can not do without them. I am unable to provide these needs and my kids end up wearing clothes for 3 days.
