What does receiving this money mean to you?
If I am bless to receive transfer from GiveDirectly, I intend to start a fish business to substain my family and me. Even though I produce char coal but the money generated is not adequate enough to sustain the family. Secondly, char coal burning is a seasonal thing in that during the rainy season, we received limited buyers and more besides, the roads get severely damaged that increase transportation costs to various market places where we go to sell our coals. However, the business will provide me with money through profit s that will be sustainable in the future because the fish business does not have a specific season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
What makes me happy in the last six months is that I was able to raise money for the past three months to pay my new woman dowry on October 4, 2021. In September, I was able to produced 52 bags of coal that was sold at $250.00 Liberian dollars/bag that covered the cost of production and the remaining was used for the dowry ceremony. I have been wishing to pay my wife dowry since September of this year when my previous wife swept everything we had and made away with our savings leaving me with nothing to start with. Paying my wife dowry brings total relief to me and my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship facing me now is Money to start a fish business. I have been burning char coal for over 15 years now which has affected me with severe headache that sometimes keeps me away from the bush for months, and that to get food to sustain my family becomes unbearable. However, I will appreciate any assistance from GiveDirectly that will provide me the opportunity to change my livelihood without risk to my personal health.
