How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the near future and beyond. I am planning to hire a piece of land for farming as I own a smaller one. I will as well hire a tractor for farming instead of doing it with the help of casual labourers. This is cost-effective as compared to when it is done by the labourers. In addition, I have plans of starting up a groceries business to be run in the evenings. Groceries business has high demand as food is consumed on a daily basis. The profits earned will be enough for my young family's basic needs like food, clothing and school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to my opinion, what Give Directly does so well is that they give out unconditional transfers, different people have different needs, and we have the freedom how to spend the transfers so long as it is something that does not harm us together with community members. The transfers are given in lump sum amounts and this helps in planning purposes in terms of the developments that we would wish to engage in at a personal level. Unlike other projects where it is given in small amounts. To avoid household conflict, what needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents. Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a parent of three boys who are still in Primary school, they are in classes two, four and five. Before the GiveDirectly transfers, I never had any stable source of income and providing for my family had been the most difficult task I have ever faced. I used the whole transfer of kshs 53,000 to purchase a power saw for my business. Before I bought the machine I used to hire it from someone else and this was quite expensive as I remained with very little money for my family's basic needs like food, clothing and education.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was around 9:00 pm when I heard my phone ring . On checking and confirming that I had indeed received money from GiveDirectly , I informed my wife who was equally very happy to learn of the same.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the dairy cow that I bought. I bought a cow that is already producing milk and I no longer stress myself on where to get money to buy milk . I am a father of one and this has helped me a lot in making sure that I get enough milk supply for consumption and resale of the surplus.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 35000 to buy a dairy cow and used another KES 10000 to buy building materials while the remaining amount was used to buy food and other basic household needs. I made a decision to buy a dairy cow since I did not have one and the cost of buying milk was getting costly. I had all along been unable to buy a dairy cow since I depended on casual work to raise income which would just give me enough to buy food for my family and nothing left to save.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always had the desire to start a business but the major huddle is capital. Receiving this money will be a relief to me since I will be able to achieve my desire. I plan to use KES 30,000 from the transfer to start poultry farming which will be a source of income for me. In line with that, I plan to plant trees for sale on 0.5 acres of land that I have so that they can sustain us in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I celebrated my son's first birthday last month. This brought me happiness as a father because I see growth and with time, he will be able to attend school, play with his mates and hold conversations together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that I am currently facing is the lack of capital to start businesses. The money that I earn from my job a driver allows me to buy food only and I cannot save some for a business.
