How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to buy 2 goats before the end of March or February. Goats are not so demanding when it comes to rearing them. They also reproduce and grow fast, additionally, their market is readily available. When they shall reproduce, I'll sell some and pay school fees, medical bills and buy food. I'll have to look for a job to be able to raise this money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has given me money to buy food and build a house. This really helped me and changed my life. I'm grateful for the money you send to people because that is what you have done so well. It is my wish that you come back and send us more money. I don't see anywhere you should improve, everything you have done is right. ilinisaidia sana natamani mrudi tena.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm a casual miner, this is the most tiresome job ever. I also wash clothes for people and sell charcoal. My husband has been jobless for the last three years hence I'm the breadwinner. We used to sleep on the floor at night and it would pain my ribs all night long hence causing us to wake up early even when we have nothing to do. So I spent $83 on a modern bed. Nowadays we sleep comfortably until when the sun rises, the bed is so comfortable that we do not experience that pain anymore. Previously, the whole roof of our house had leakages, it would worsen when it rained since the kitchen floor would be flooded with rain water. So I bought 27 iron sheets, (I can not remember the exact cost) and construction timber worth $65. I paid $270 for labour and constructed a 2 room house, I have also included a verandah and kitchen to the house. It is so comfortable and I'm contented Before I used to struggle paying school fees for my 3 children who are in primary school, they even had arrears of $50 which I also cleared with the transfer. I'm so grateful to Give Directly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 1pm in the afternoon and I was on my way home from the quarry where I work as a casual labourer when I got the SMS confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I had desired to have a better house for so long since the one we had been living in was in a very poor state and condition. It was not possible to build a better house for my family because the wages I used to get from my job as a casual labourer in the quarry were not sufficient enough to enable me to do that and mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs and pay for my children.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to address most of the pressing challenges that before were a nightmare to settle. Getting food regularly was a huge problem, and getting regular decent meals or just seemed like an impossible dream. However, ever since I got to be enrolled in the program and started receiving money from GiveDirectly, we are getting regular and decent meals as well as get to change the daily meals unlike before when we were only accustomed to one particular meal throughout which was also not on a regular basis. I was also able to get the house that I had desired for so long, a better and proper place for my family and myself to sleep, which makes me confidently say that I am living a life of improved standards, all thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 49000 on building a better and proper house for my family and myself because we had been living in a makeshift one which was barely covered and hardly protected us from extreme weather conditions especially when it rains at which meant that we would spend the whole night awake. I desired to have a good place to sleep that would give me the peace of mind and heart that I have longed for a long time. Getting this house was not possible before as my job in the quarry as a casual labourer hardly raised enough money and the little I could get mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs and pay for my children's school fees, therefore, making the house a seemingly impossible dream. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly to our village and getting me to be enrolled, I am so happy now that I was able to get the house that I had desired for so long as well as my heart and mind at peace. All thanks to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For ten years now, my husband has not been lucky with securing meaningful work. We have survived from hand to mouth. Limited money saw us prioritize food and school fees. Our house is in bad shape and could come tumbling down any minute now. I am afraid for my family's safety but there is nothing much I can do about it. If these funds can help us put up another house, I would be so grateful.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have so much responsibility and minimal resources. Honestly, I have almost forgotten what joy used to feel like. If I am not dealing with a sick child, another is home for school fees. If my family is not going to bed hungry, a bed has broken and we are on the floor for several nights. It feels like problems identified my home and set base here. They look pretty comfortable and not in a hurry to leave if you ask me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Two days ago, my husband was called for a cook job at a restaurant in Kilifi. I am happy about it but the pay is so little. I am anxious about how we will split the KES 6,000 he will be earning per month. There is so much to take care of. School fees, food, my children are walking around in tattered clothes, our house needs to be repaired. How much baggage can one family bear? I could use some relief.
