How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Apparently, I do not have any new goals since I am yet to complete paying up for the motorcycle that I did take on hire purchase for my husband. Furthermore, I will be fast tracking the payment of the motorcycle so that we can breath a sigh of relief.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I must comend the GiveDirectly for living up to their word by sending us the cash transfer as promised. This contributed towards the positive impacts of many lifes. There is nothing that GiveDirectly has not done well .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My most recent transfer was spent on repairing both the interior and exterior walls of my house through plastering. Before getting my most recent transfer my house used to be in shambles considering that it was a mud house and it's walls had started developing cracks all over. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I managed to repair it with ease. With my first and second transfer, I had an opportunity to purchase a motorcycle on a hire purchase mode . Indeed this motorcycle has gone a long way in assisting my hubby fend for our family basic needs through the proceeds from the motorcycle. Initially, he used to depend on the good will of other motorcycle riders who would lend him their motorcycle in shifts in order to use it to ferry customers at a fee. Through this arrangement he would sometimes miss out on a motorcycle hence going home empty handed. However, things did change for better after the purchase of our own motorcycle for we no longer depend on fellow motorcyclist to make a living. To suppliment on our income, I do vend charcoal and even sell half cakes. I am glad this has made us meet the basic needs of my family of four. Thanks GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was one tough evening and my thoughts were all over trying to figure out where I could get food for my family. I was at my last resort of sleeping hungry as I hoped for a better day the following day. It was at that moment that I received a notification message that I had received a cash transfer of KES 55000 from Give Directly. I felt at ease that my situation had changed drastically and my main problem which was the food was solved at that particular moment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily since I started receiving the transfers is the pride of having a reliable source of income. My spouse has a motorbike which he uses for taxi services while I have a fast-food business. I am glad we now have enough income from my family, and we can even manage to save some.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse was the sole breadwinner, but he did not have a reliable source of income. He relied on people's motorbikes for a few hours a day and whenever he was not lucky to get one we would go without any food. This made life tricky because meeting a family's needs was a real challenge. At the time when the first transfer was sent, we had totally nothing in the house. We had resolved to sleep hungry on that day. We, therefore, spent KES 5000 on enough foodstuffs that we could feed on for a month. KES 30000 we spent on a motorcycle. He now has a reliable source of income. We cannot go for a day without food and even have some for saving. KES 7000 I spent on a mattress and some of our clothing. We did not have a mattress instead we slept on rags because our income could not afford a new decent mattress. Since I did not have any source of income, I spent KES 12500 on a new business where I sell fast food. We are now more stable financially.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious house for my family. This is because I am sharing a one-roomed house with my two children which does not offer me privacy. I am planning to spend KES 40,000 to construct a bigger house of two rooms and buy three beds and mattresses. I will use a portion of the remaining amount to pay a deposit of a motorcycle for my husband. This will enable him to have an income-generating activity. He will save the earnings for future use.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last year September I gave birth to a baby boy. This brought me joy and happiness because it fulfilled my desire to have a son in my family. It is something that made me always feel uneasy. I remembered my neighbor married a second wife because the first one had girls only.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is a lack of finance. I am a housewife depending on my husband who relies on the casual labor of construction. The jobs are not easy to get and the earnings of KES 400 per day are not enough for the needs of the family. In a day I require KES. 200 to feed a family of five members. Due to this, It has been a great challenge to put food on the table for my household. Sometimes, I seek assistance from relatives, which is shameful.
