What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent our entire recent transfer on paying part of hospital debt. We had a debt of KES 150000. I had fallen ill sometime back and I had to be hospitalized. The hospital bill accrued to KES 1 million and luckily, my national health insurance scheme paid almost KES 800000. We also got some of the money from a fundraising event that was held at my home. The hospital had allowed us to go home with the promise to pay the remaining amount which we didn't know where we going to get it. We use to have a shop business before but unfortunately, we had to close it down since we spent most of the money on paying off the hospital bills. I have not regained the strength to do any work and my wife has not gotten the time to do any income-earning activity since she spends most of her time taking care of me. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help. May God bless you.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We are happy because we managed to reduce the debt that we are owing to the hospital. We are thus hopeful that with time, we will be able to clear the whole amount. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for supporting us.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning and I had already woken up at home. I was in the company of my wife when suddenly I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I wondered what it was all about and hence I decided to check it. I was surprised and delighted when I read that we had received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had earlier promised us. I immediately told my wife about it who was by now wondering what was going on due to the sudden change of mood. She was so happy too on hearing this and we thanked God for it.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With old age, my body has suddenly grown weak and this affects my wife too because we are age mates. This restricts what we can do because we are not strong enough. We wake up every morning to a new complaint in our health. It is a worrying trend that is affecting our income and quality of life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I was diagnosed with diabetes last year September the medications and the hospital bill came to KES. 600,000 which was so difficult to raise. We asked our friends, neighbors, and relatives to come to our aid and we managed to raise the full amount successfully. This gave me a lot of happiness and a sense of belonging.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been a businessman for most of my adult life and that's what helped me raise the 14 children that I was blessed with. We have since grown old with my wife and we can no longer run the business well because it involves traveling to different towns every day which wearies us a lot. We would like to focus on raising livestock going forward and these transfers will give us a good start. This will transition our income from being dependent on the business to raising livestock. We will therefore spend the transfers on buying two dairy cows which we estimate that we shall be able to sell 15 liters daily and earn about KES 800 which is enough to sustain us.
