How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having bought the sewing machine and buying some materials has really made my life to be so easy. Previously I used to have the tailoring business but the problem was, I used to go hire the sewing machine. It was not that easy because the little profit I was getting, I had to share with the owner of the machine. Secondly, it was the only business I was depending on. I am now a happy tailor because I have my own machine and also I am selling the new stock of the materials that I bought. This will double my income because the two business is doing so fine. I can now meet my family's basic needs without straining much.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been of great impact to us in my community. First, most of us have cows both dairy and oxen. With the oxen, we are assured of consuming less time in ploughing our farms and also getting some good harvests. To add on that, the majority of us now have some good permanent houses which are iron roofed. The previous ones were small huts which were temporary. Lastly, our children are now studying without any difficulties because we cleared the fees arrears that they had. All children in my village are now at school According to me, I do not see any sector that GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying three oxen at KES 15000 each. I am now ambitious and happy because I will benefit a lot from them. I will no longer need to hire them from my neighbors the way I used to do. Secondly, the level of food production will increase. I then bought a bed, a mattress, and some bedsheets. Initially, I used to sleep on an old mat. With the remaining amount of money, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for my family that would take us a month's time.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My tailoring business was not doing well and I was earning a little income from it as I didn't have enough textile materials to operate smoothly and to fully satisfy my clients. It was through the transfer that I was able to buy enough stock I needed that will take longer and I will earn a good income from it. To me, this the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification early in the morning as I was preparing to start my new day in my tailoring shop. On checking, the notification was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received money from them. I was very happy to start my day with a large sum of money on my phone.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a pair of oxen to assist me in ploughing my farm when the rains are adequate for cultivation. I did this because, through them, it will be possible to do early preparations and also early planting. Previously I would hire from other people which were too expensive and hectic due to the high costs. With the pair, I am assured of good harvests since I will fully utilise my farm and I will not incur any hiring costs. I am also offering tailoring services and I didn't have enough textile materials to run my operations, because of this, I used the transfer to buy enough textlie materials that will take a longer time before it is finished. Through this, I will also be earning a good income as I will be providing my services to a large clientelle without any hindrance. Lastly, I did shopping for my child who was resuming school and paid a token of my transfer for his school fees and bought enough food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a tailoring shop at Mariango shopping center but it is not doing so well due to less equipment and stock. With this transfer I will purchase another sewing machine, more fabrics and an iron box to facilitate my work. With this in place, I will employ another tailor since I am projecting an improvement in the business. I will also purchase dairy cows to constantly supply milk in my village since there is no one doing it. These businesses will generate a stable income that will cater for my family needs in terms of food, clothing and medical care. I will also save extra cash to purchase a motorcycle for my husband in future because he is currently employed by a neighbour.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is the evening when I am talking with my husband. This is because he makes a lot of jokes thus making me laugh and relieve all the stress and fatigue of the day. It is also during this time that we plan for a bright future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I suffered from tetanus for six months. This condition drained our financial resources because my parents spent more money to cater for my medical needs. They even sold our four goats to see me through a medical surgery at Mariakani Sub-County hospital. This really affected our financial stability and I could not continue with education in high school thus opted to do tailoring in a village polytechnic.
