How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I received two transfers and I am not going to receive any longer, I would save little by little from my business to buy two more hectares of land and build m my house, eat well, and do farming. I would like to request GiveDirectly to at least consider me by adding more funds.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support. Indeed, I do not have anything to complain about since You are like an eye-opener to me. I lacked a lot in the past and there was nothing I could do. At least now I own two hectares’ pieces of land and would like to save and buy two more hectares.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like yesterday when I was at the farm when I saw my son with a phone on his hand and he looked excited. I was nervous because I knew there should be some good news he wanted to share. After asking him what the matter was, he told me that GiveDirectly had sent my first transfer into my Mpesa account. On hearing this, I was very excited and I was sure all my dream are now achievable. I remember canceling my farming plans for that day. We went back home and extended the celebration with the other family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through financial help, I was able to acquire a piece of land. I have been, living with my children in a very small piece of land a half an acre and land and my desire was to buy my own land and build a home for my children and their generation. Also during the planting season, I have been leasing other people's lands which were relatively expensive. Due to the financial hardships I am facing and being old together with my sick spouse, I lacked the resources to buy my own land. I am happy that I managed to fulfill this and I know I will be getting lots of harvests because I am even planning to practice large-scale farming. I never expected this to happen to me anytime soon because it has been tough all along. I will cover be thankful to GiveDirectly for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a new wooden bed at KES 5000 which was to replace the old traditional bed made of ropes. I have been experiencing lots of discomforts whenever I sleep and most of the days I could wake up so tired and with back pains. I am happy this has finally come to an end. I later bought a piece of land (4hacres) which I will be paying in installments. I managed to pay KES 30000 for a start and I am happy I will now own the piece of land since I have been leasing those of my friends since mine was very small. I also cleared school fees of KES 10000 for my grandson who is in secondary school. He was so lucky because they were even about to sit for their exams and definitely he would miss it. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means land ownership to my household. This is because I have been living on family land which belongs to my elder brother in law almost 40 years now. Recently, my brother-in-law sold the land and this has left me living with fear because I might be forced to leave anytime. Due to this fear, I opted to purchase my land but the much I paid as a deposit was only 300 dollars, and the balance as of now is 1700 dollars. With the help from GiveDirectly, I am now happy to know that I will soon own the land since I intend to spend the entire transfer to pay for the land.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day because it is usually at this time when we are all back at home from our different areas of work. The resting always gives me the feeling of happiness. Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when I get stressed with the strenuous work of charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life is financial instability. Currently, I do charcoal work and my husband is depending on casual jobs which are also not reliable. With the worries of being forced to leave where we currently live, I have been stressed a lot since we lack money to pay the balance that we owe our neighbor who sold land to us. I am now happy that, I will soon be able to own a land courtesy of GiveDirectly.
