How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm looking for money so that I buy another piece of land; approximately 50m by 100m. The main aim of this is so that I can use it for farming since my wife and I are dedicated farmers, so we find our current piece of land to be too small for farming. I require $550.natafuta pesa niongeze plot nifanye ukulima. hii ninayo haitoshi. current one is 100 by 100. to add 50 by 100 for farming. I had hoped to receive more transfers from Give Directly but since its impossible, I'll wait for my cows to reproduce then sell some. Or should I ever receive any money from other organisations, I'll use it for this purpose.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly did everything well. The best thing you did was the census meeting where you taught us everything about your project. Now we do not rely on rumours because you gave us first hand information. You have enabled us to do several projects that we never imagined were possible. Some people have bought land, cattle and motorbikes. I pray for you every day. I don't see anywhere to improve, your whole process was okay.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have no stable source of income I used to drill wells and pit latrines. That job is very tiring. My wife is employed at a local hotel hence she is the bread winner of our family. So I took $350 and bought a second hand motorbike which I now use to run 'bodaboda' business. It has become my main source of income and I now support my wife in providing for the family. The motorbike also comes in handy when it comes to emergency travels, sometimes neighbours call me past midnight to take their family members to hospital using my motorbike. It is like I bought another pair of legs for myself. My 7 children used to sleep on floor mats so I took $60 and bought 2 mattresses, thanks to Give Directly that nowadays they always look forward to restful nights. I then spent $150 on a heifer and right now it has already given birth. I'm so happy because I no longer buy milk. I even intend to start selling some milk so as to increase my income.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was herding in the fields. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing, on checking what the message entailed. That was when I learnt that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and excited because I knew that we would be able to put the money into good use. I then went home and broke the good news to my family members were was equally happy
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to pay for the parcel of land without any obstacles. And secondly, I managed to clear the school fees arrears for my children. I no longer worry anymore of my children would be sent home to collect school fees. I was unable to achieve all these before due to unreliable sources of income. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much joy and happiness into my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am married and blessed with seven children. I work as a casual labourer within the village. Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I opted to use KES 20,000 in paying for a parcel of land that I had acquired before but I had not settled all the payments. I then used KES 15,000 on paying school fees for my children. Additionally. I used KES 15,000 in buying a dairy cow to add to the two cows that I had before. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I was unable to achieve all these before due to the unreliable source of income and school fees responsibilities. I am so happy for the support that lifted my living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are a family of 9 and all my 7 children attend Luhangani primary school. A nearby school where they walk to and from. The biggest challenge is providing their basic needs especially food, and paying school fees for all of them. On receiving the first cash transfer of 55,000 KSH we plan to set aside 15,000 KSH which will allocate it for food, we plan to a good shopping that includes grains and Dry food that will sustain us for a while. On the other balance which is about 40,000 KSH we plan to settle school fees which amounts to at least 1,0000 KSH, and plan to use the remaining balance to renovate our home to make it spacious, so my children can live cormfotably.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I sacrificed to buy a cow at 14,000 KSH during the drought period, and it's has given birth to two more cows and this gives me joy, Because I know when it gets rough I can resell one at a good profit.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house is too small to accommodate my seven children, it's also the same place that we use as a kitchen, so it's very difficult to sleep cormfotably. My children attendance in school is worrying because they are chased almost every week to get school fees, and if am not in a good position to give out anything, I live them to stay at home which is affecting their studies.
