How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life because of GD transfers is that I have a new and presentable house. I did not know in my life I could own a semi-permanent house. This is because of my low income from casual work which was very inconsistent. Without the transfers, I would have taken a loan to build a new house and I would have really struggled to pay it back since my income alone could not meet our needs successfully. Thanks to GD for the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel GD did well in giving cash to everyone. It helped everyone in their area of need which was the most important thing. There is nothing GD is not doing well according to me.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, nails, and timber which I am currently using to put up a new house. The one I had was old and leaning on one side. I feared it would collapse anytime. I had started looking for loans to buy building materials when I received my transfer from GD. I am glad I never lacked a place to live in because of the transfers. I also used part of the transfer to buy new household items such as bedding, utensils, seats and steel doors. My house is in a very good condition because of the transfers. The remaining part of the transfer I used on buying a solar system which has helped me reduce my daily expenditure by not buying kerosene on a daily basis as before the transfers.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I had been yearning to have my own permanent house for the longest time and getting this reward has been a dream come true. I actually succeeded to construct a decent house using the transfer from GiveDirectly. This has made my life to be totally different considering the fact that the previous one was a temporary hut that had a leaking roof and was also very small. Being the breadwinner and a widow, life was very tough. I had no hopes of constructing a decent house in my life. The little amount of money that I was earning was majorly spent on paying school fees for my children and meeting their basic needs. I am now happy since the coming of GiveDirectly has transformed my life in numerous ways. I sleep under an iron-roofed house and I no longer worry about the rains which have been a bother in my entire life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember very well what happened that morning. It was around 7 am when I was about to make a call to my son then my phone vibrated continuously. I quickly decided to check what the notification was all about. I was very happy when I realized that I had received an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly and immediately started planning on how I could use the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I had been longing to sleep in a decent permanent house and because of this, I decided to spend a larger portion of my first transfer in buying building materials such as iron sheets, nails, and building poles. The house is almost finished and this will be finally a dream come true. Currently, I am living in a small grass-thatched hut. The stress of replenishing the grass thatched roof yearly has taken a toll on me because it was very expensive. Hopefully, I will move into the beautiful house soon courtesy fo GiveDirectly's transfer. I then bought some goats as my potential asset. I opted to buy them because they reproduce twice a year and mature faster. Additionally, paying school fees for my children was also my priority and so I used part of my transfer to pay both primary and college fees. The remaining amount of money was spent on buying sufficient foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My grass thatched hut is very difficult to maintain because I have to replace the roof every 4 months. Getting grass in such a dry stricken area is no joke and most of the rainy seasons come when my roof is almost open. This means I have to struggle for shelter and I cannot bear the cold in this house. The walls also keep on falling because they are not strong enough to resist the strong winds that prevail in this area. I am even afraid that it might collapse while I am inside. I therefore plan to construct a good house with iron sheets roof and much stronger walls. This will save me the agony of living in a house that is a threat to my safety.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am mostly happy in the morning because I feel so energized. Such strength makes it easy to undertake my daily activities that range from household chores to farm work. This determines how fruitful my day will be.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The death of my husband 17 years ago came as a big blow to family. He left me to be the sole provider of our 4 children. Before his death, he suffered from Urinary Tract disease that saw him undergo 2 surgeries. His illness forced us to sell our 20 goats but still he succumbed. This means he left us with nothing and life had to start a fresh. Besides subsistence farming, I burn charcoal for a living. This job does not earn me enough and I couldn't even educate my first 3 children. If my husband was alive maybe things could have been better. I consider losing him as the biggest hardship because I still feel its impact to date.
