How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that emerged recently is to own livestock more so goats. I purposely desire to have them on my homestead for my children's education journey. Paying their fees has been the biggest challenge and I trust that by having them, I will not have to struggle much to pay the fees because I will be in a position to sell some and clear the arrears.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly is the best organisation I have ever come across. This is because they treated us fairly and equally despite of age, tribe, religion and gender. Also, we all received the same amount of cash transfers as promised without any delay. I therefore can't point out anything that GiveDirectly needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets, nails, timber, building poles and all the necessary materials. These were for the completion of my son's house which was under construction using the first transfer. I had to settle this matter because, for ages, he has been seeking shelter from his friends who lived in the neighbouring village. I was always worried about his well-being because some of his friends did not have good morals at all. As a parent, I now feel contented for finally being able to build for him a decent house in my compound. I also bought stationeries, and uniforms and paid fees for my daughter who is in her third year in high school. With the remaining amount of money, I had to buy sufficient food for my family and cleared all the pending bills.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 in the morning when I was preparing breakfast for my family when my elder son started calling my name while smiling. I was certain that there was some good news and I couldn't keep calm. He later said that I had received my cash transfers from GiveDirectly. I remember leaving the task I was handling and started dancing joyously. We sat as a family and started planning and made sure we do not waste even a single cent.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have a nice shelter. Over the twenty years, I have been in marriage life has been so hard. The issue of poor shelter has been the main challenge and I have always been praying to God to help us through. During the winter seasons, it was so tough because all we could do was sleep at our friend's house which was a bit far away from the village we lived in. Also, their houses were not spacious enough and this forced us to sometimes remain in outhouses till the rains stops. As a jobless mother of six children, I was hopeless in life providing for their daily meals was not easy. Therefore it would take ages for me to build a good house using my cash. This is like a miracle to us as a family because we never saw it coming. I am glad that we are sheltering in nice houses and keeping all our properties safe.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying thirty-eight pieces of iron sheets at KES 35400, nails at KES 2000, building poles at KES 6000, and the labor charges of KES 3500. I had intended to buy two new houses, for my son and mine. Initially, we used to sleep in a temporary hut which was also small and my son has been sheltering in my neighbor's houses. For now, the story is different because we are sleeping comfortably in a decent shelter without any worries. With the amount of money that had remained, I bought foodstuffs like maize flour, grains, and vegetable among others. Of late we have been taking three meals a day which makes us even stronger. May God continue to bless this organization and help others.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me build another house. I have four school going children together with one daughter who seperated from her husband, forcing me to leave the extra house I had for her. We are now very squeezed and I do not even have the capacity to host visitors. The two roomed house that I am planning to construct will cost me around KES 30,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of October, my husband sold a few livestock and cleared the land debt of KES 40,000 that we were owed by those who sold for us this land. This has really brought peace in my mind since it was a debt that we were unable to clear for such a long time. I can now concentrate on other things.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The high cost of living is what has become a challenge for me. This is due to the fact that I do not have any work to do inorder to get money. My farm is usually my only hope to get food but it has not rained enough to harvest any crop since the beginning of the year. This means that we have to buy everything including food. My children are currently at home due to lack of school fees. The little money I get from selling charcoal goes into buying food.
