How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before GiveDirectly,I was supplying water using a cart in Mathare and the income I made was merger despite the hard work . It reached a point where I had lost hope in life hence I started idling because I never saw the possibility of my visions come true and my neighbours used to perceive me to have joined the gang groups in Mathare which wasn't the case. Currently, life is different in that I am able to run my business smoothly and provide basic needs for myself and my family members with ease.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to save part of the profits that I am making from the business and expand it for its sustainability because I have a positive feeling that through this business I will be a successful person in future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to boost my milk vending business 30,000 KES which I supply in different shops within Nairobi. The remaining amount I paid rent for business premises. Now I am able to run my business smoothly and provide basic needs for myself and my family members with ease.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been had I never received the transfer in that I can now afford to pay my house rent, I used to stay with my father and I was not comfortable with it. This is because in my culture it is not acceptable for a grown up man to stay with his parents. Thank you Give Directly since I can now rent my house and no longer live with my father.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal for my life that I didn't have before receiving the transfer is to start a new business where I sell milk in Mathare. This is because currently I get little money from my business where I fetch and sell water to the residents of Mathare. At times when there is constant supply of water in Mathare, I do not get customers to buy water hence I will not get money to cater for my basic needs. Starting this business will therefore be a constant source of income to cater for my basic needs such as buying food and pay rent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend my most recent transfer to pay rent. I used to live with my father and I was not comfortable with it. In my culture , it is not good for a grown up man to live with his parents and this lowered my dignity. I am now happy since I can afford to pay my own rent and no longer live with my father. I also sent part of transfers to my mother who is living in our rural home. I decided on this because she did not have enough food due to poor harvest caused by drought in the last harvesting season.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goals mmm, I have many goals. Buying a handcart was one of them but that has now been accomplished. I could say, being the first born male in my culture, my siblings cannot build their houses until I build mine hence that is among the goals that I currently have to reduce the pressure from my parents. Here in Mathare, I am planning to start supplying the shops with milk.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I can now sell water efficiently using a handcart unlike before I had to carry jerricans of water using my hands this was very tiresome. Besides that, I have an income from the water business and I also get enough having bought a new mattress. Generally there is a very big difference ever since I started receiving the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers were of great help. Firstly I bought a handcart to help me sell water for the members in Mathere. This cost 8,000 shillings, I am also a breadwinner back at home so I sent my mum 6,000 shillings. The remaining amount I did spend on buying a new mattress the one I previously had was old, it felt like sleeping on the floor and also bought some foodstuff for my personal use.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I felt like a burden had been taken off my shoulder. I have never thought I would receive such amount of money in my life so I kinda had mixed feelings. One thing that I am certain about is that I was very happy cause most of my problems are going to be sorted out.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I want to buy my own house here in mathare(a semi permanent house). In addition to that, I also want to buy my own handcart for carrying water that I will be selling to Mathare residents which I consider will be a boost to my business. Lastly,I am planning on buying house goods because I stay with a friend and we currently don't have enough households item.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is housing because it has not been easy for me to pay for rent.Daily sustenance and unemployment has also been a challenge to me because it has not been easy to afford food rent and clothing .
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambitions is to own my own house as paying rent has been a problem to me due to lack of a stable source of income. I would also want to boost my existing business of selling water and live a good life.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I always wake up very early in the morning, I take tea, I then head to my work place where I wait for people whom I fetch water for and carry to their homes. Later on I take my lunch come back to my normal area of work to wait for more customers and in the evening, I go back to my house and sleep, after a long tiring day. On my free time I spend my day at the video shows watching movies.
