How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
What a good feeling to have after building a decent shelter for my mother with GiveDirectly. Its breath taking to see her no longer staying at her brother - in - law old shanty that was deserted when she was rendered homeless since her house had collapsed. Secondly, I have been able to settle all my son's school fees. This has brought an additional peace of mind. Before, I have done several fund raisers to raise money to pay his school fees and even sold a fair share of my properties for his education. Thanks you GiveDirectly for bettering our life which wouldn't have been the case without the financial support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well with the intention it had of uplifting our living standards. Out of the money we received, the beneficiaries have acquired livestock, household assets and built houses.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a larger part of my second transfer to buy iron sheets and timbers which facilitated the construction of a new house for my mother. I feel peaceful seeing her live in this new shelter gracefully. I also paid school fees for my son is in secondary school with the remaining amount.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that seeing my mother living in a decent a house makes me feel happy and at peace. I feel relieved because she won't be walking at night begging for shelter which was so risky and embarrassing at the same time. Were it not for GiveDirectly my mother would still be suffering. I thank God because with this help I managed to build a decent house and took her to the hospital since she was also sickly and old. I always pray for GiveDirectly because they have improved the health of my mother and there is hope for her to live longer.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the message early in the morning and could not believe what I saw. At first, I thought they were random messages that con men usually send hoping to lure and con us. So I double-checked in order to be sure not to fall victim of such con men only to realize it was genuine money sent to me by Give Directly. I was so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I was so thankful because I knew my life will never be the same again. I was sure with this money some of my greatest troubles that have been a thorn in my skin would come to an end.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I was planning to build a house for my mother because for a long time she has been begging for shelter from neighbors. I used to feel bad but there was nothing I could do because I used to earn very little. I almost slid into depression knowing my mother was out there moving from house to house. At times she could be sent away yet she is old and sick. Being the sole breadwinner of the family, when I received this transfer, I bought building materials such as iron sheets, building poles and paid for the mason. The house is now almost complete, and it's such a joy knowing that she will no longer be begging for shelter. I also paid for her medical expenses and spent the remaining amount to buy daily food and other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream is to start a business of supplying cooking oil in my area. This is because I have noticed quite a rise in numbers of women who engage in catering business. With this I will earn some income and cater for my basic needs of food and water with much ease. Lastly, I plan to buy indigenous goats that will act as a buffer whenever I need financial resources. I opted for goats because they are drought resistant and more marketable compared to cows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Mornings are the happiest part of my day because for me, a new day is an opportunity to work harder in accomplishing my dreams.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is lack of finances to accomplish my dream of starting a business so I can be self reliant. From 2007 when I lost my job as a personal assistant, I have not been successful in getting formal employment again. Since then, I mostly depend on farming which can be very disappointing due to low rainfall in the area. In the last rainy season, I only harvested a handful of maize that did not even last me a week. It is quite a hopeless situation.
