Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was sitting outside at home, enjoying the sunset, when my son came to tell me that I had received $180 from GiveDirectly. This was exactly the news I needed at that moment. All my worries seemed to lighten, and my heart was filled with joy and gratitude. My first thought was to use the money to go to the hospital, as I had been sick and didn’t have the funds for treatment. The news brought me immense relief and a sense of hope.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since receiving $180 from GiveDirectly is the profound improvement in my overall well-being. At 82 years old, I was struggling with illness and lacked basic comforts. The money allowed me to get necessary medical care, buy a new bed and mattress for the first time, and secure enough food for the next two months. Most importantly, it enabled me to move in with my elder son, where I can receive the close care I need. This support from GiveDirectly has significantly transformed my quality of life, bringing me comfort, health, and peace of mind.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Recently, upon receiving $180 from GiveDirectly, I decided to use the money to improve my overall well-being, as I am 82 years old. I had been sick and needed immediate medical attention, so I spent $25 on health care. After getting the medication, I’m now back to my normal health.
I also needed a comfortable place to sleep, as I spent most of my time in bed. I used $90 to buy a new bed and a comfortable mattress. This was the first time I’ve ever owned a bed and mattress, and the quality of sleep I’m now enjoying is something I have never experienced before.
Given my age, I can no longer farm and lack the energy to do so. I used $32 to buy enough food to last me for about two months. Having a reliable food supply is essential for my current situation while I’m on medication.
With the remaining money, I arranged to travel and move in with my elder son, who lives in a neighboring village. I need close care, and this is the best place for me to receive it. Thanks to GiveDirectly’s support, I have been able to make these important changes in my life, and I am eternally grateful.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Being old and lack of support from neighbours and relatives within is the biggest challenge am facing because sometimes I fall sick at night and no one checks on me untill my grand sons come. Am planning to use KES 30000 of cash transfers to relocate to my daughters compound so that I will be assisted there. I will use KES 45000 to build single house for my grandsons because they usually sleep in neighbour house because iam not able to build house for them. I will use the remaining money to buy food, beddings and livestock's for my family and because am ageing I need to leave an asset for my grandsons
What is the happiest part of your day?
My grand son stood on the gap to support me and also took me to get eye surgery. Iam now a happy grand mother of 2 sons because i do charcoal burning to support them on their basic needs I was not able to do it before the surgery due to blindness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am living in an area prone to flooding. And am very old iam not comfortable staying in cold area because my health is getting worse each and everyday due to infections. I have difficulty most of the time when I come out of the house to release my self due to confusion that comes with old age. Am planning to relocate to my daughters land so that I can get support from her.
