How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current goal is to make sure the enterprise I just started expands. We are grateful for the profits since they allow us to support our way of life. In order to be in a position to serve many customers, which will result in greater profits, my objective is to use a portion of the profits to cover our daily expenses and stock it with the remaining funds.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The Give Directly's consideration of diversity while enrolling people in the program, in my opinion, was motivating. The majority of individuals have improved their lives as a result of this and the freedom to spend the money however they considered fit. This can be seen by the percentage rise in school enrollment, new businesses, and improved housing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I set aside a larger percentage of the first payout when I received it, and I combined it with the entirety of my second transfer to invest in opening a mobile money store. Burning charcoal is the most prevalent economic activity we have. The trees have been exhausted and the charcoal is not marketable because almost everyone does it. The wisest decision was to invest the money in the mobile money industry, as the profits have allowed us to survive. Due to my advanced age, my daughter manages the shop while I handle the regular household duties.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the afternoon at around 2 pm while my daughter who is also my helper and I were in the field fetching some firewood. My phone rang and I thought someone was calling me only to realize it was a message tone. Since I am illiterate, I requested my daughter to check and interpret the information for me. Upon checking she jumped in happiness and I was wondering what it could be. She then calmly informed me I had received the first transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. I was filled with joy and happiness for the information I received. This made me leave the field for home despite not having reached the target bundle of firewood I wanted. This happiness was because I had not received such a huge amount of money in my life before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is how my life has changed from casual labor to owning a business. Initially, I faced so many challenges in bringing up my two boys and one daughter who were left by their father at tender ages. I had to venture into different ways of sourcing money for their upkeep which was too tiring for me. As of now, I am grateful for the transfer and the sensitization which was done to us by GiveDirectly. Through the advice I received, I have been able to start a business and maintain it. I am now relying on it for upkeep. I no longer go for casual labor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On the day I withdrew the money, the first thing I did was buy some food stuff because hunger was not doing us good. Therefore, I bought some food items for KES 4500.00. For the remaining amount, I saw it prudent to invest it in a business so that I would be having an income-generating activity. Initially, I used to do casual labor like fetching and selling firewood because I am a widow and I have three children to take care of them. Based on that, I opened an M-Pesa shop with KES 50000.00. Since my daughter had the know-how on that business, I took her to be in charge and as of now it is running well and I cater to my family's needs without straining.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to take my daughter to college upon receiving this money. She completed the form four years ago, due to financial issues I wasn't able to take her for further studies. Therefore I will use eighty-five thousand Kenya shillings to take her to college and to make sure I have cleared the fees of the two years, the remaining amount to invest in farming so that I can get enough yield that can sustain me until the next season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first daughter got a job recently, she helps me to feed her two siblings and meet other basic needs in my household. This brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a widow. My husband passed on ten years ago leaving three kids. Since then my life has been a struggle to feed and educate the children. What hurts me most is to see them here at home without going to school. The last two kids completed primary education and they didn't make it to join secondary education due to the hard life that I am going through. I lost hope of educating my children but for now, I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you GiveDirectly for restoring my aspiration of Educating my children.
