How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I do not have any goal or set plan that I will work on once I get some money. This is because; the drought that has affected us has made me think of how my family will survive on daily basis. In that regard, if I get the money I will plan on how best to utilize it but the first thing is to ensure that there is food at home.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organization that needs to be emulated by other organizations. Its approach and strategies are well thought out. I benefited from this organization by getting a house because initially, I had no house at all. Due to how thankful I am for this support I can say GiveDirectly does not have any fault at all, not only on my side but also other people are talking well of GiveDirectly on how it did to them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the main agenda was to complete the roofing of my house which I started using the first transfer. Concerning that, I bought 13 pieces of iron sheets for KES 25000.00 and I am now comfortable in my GiveDirectly house. I also paid KES 4000.00 school fees for my primary school children so as not to be sent back home during class hours instead remain in school for better learning. Having settled the two items, I saved the rest of the money for family use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the transfer notification in the morning. I was taking breakfast with my children when I heard my phone ringing, a message alert. Since I could not understand the contents of the message, I called my helper who confirmed to me that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy as I celebrated with my children. I could now take care of the needs like food which has been a challenge after a failed harvest.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning the livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life. Through the transfer, I managed to buy oxen and two goats. These are living assets which I can readily depend on in case of a financial need like raising school fees for my children. I do not have a source of income that I can solely rely on, thus having this livestock is a source of finance. The oxen will also be helpful in ploughing my farm during the planting season. I will no longer be hiring from neighbours since it is expensive. I am expecting the goats to multiply and exchange them for cows in future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30000 of my first transfer on buying livestock which include oxen and two goats. I did not have any livestock on my compound since I could not afford to buy them. These are living assets which I can rely on when I am faced with a financial need. I depend on menial jobs and I feel I might not be able to save enough money for my children's fees in the near future. Owning these livestock will help me to raise fees for them. In addition to the livestock, I also spent the transfer on purchasing enough foodstuffs for my family. I bought a 90kg sack of maize and some other cereals that can take us a whole month. Food is currently a challenge to us since we depend on subsistence farming. I have not been able to do farming for almost a year now due to a prolonged drought. I am happy that my family had enough food unlike before when we could skip meals due to lack of money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means self empowerment and even employment for me. For about five years, I have had a dream of practicing livestock farming. However, lack of enough funds has made it unachievable. The moment I receive the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I will buy five cows. In due time, I will be able to get and sell milk from my cows, and as well do a buy-and-sell livestock business. This, will not only ensure a continuous flow of income to my family but also dignify my life at this age.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening. As a farmer, I spend a better part of my day in the field farming. In the evening, I get time to rest after a long day and enjoy dinner with my husband and son.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of money is the biggest hardship I have ever faced. I lost both my mother and my four children in the past ten years due to health related complications. I used a lot of money in their hospital bills. I was forced to sell all my livestock in order to raise money for their hospital bills. Unfortunately, they did not make it. From that moment, all my finances were drained in totality and I have never made a come back again financially.
