How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Previously, I used to sleep on sacks on the floor as well as my children. This was embarrassing and uncomfortable, unfortunately, that it what I could afford by then. As a farmer whatever little I got was met for food and a few household expenditures hence having a decent bedding was luxury. Therefore my life is different from how it was if I never received the transfer in that, I sleep in a decent place because I have been able to buy a heavy density mattress. My house is also lit because I managed to buy a solar lantern. Before, I had been using a traditional lamp which was disadvantageous to my family because the probability of this house getting burnt out of negligence was high. At the same time buying paraffin was also expensive.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love that GiveDirectly gives out unconditional cash transfer. We were given the freedom to buy whatever we lacked and the fact that everything was explained to us before we got the money was amazing. The officers were friendly and approachable that made us ask whatever we needed to know for clarity reason. This made has feel involved in the project hence we were able to even use the money freely.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer on paying school fees for my son who had been sent home for a week due to fee arrears. I just do not have any idea when he could have gone back to school because I depend on casual jobs which are difficult to get. I am glad that the money came in handy. I also renovated my house. The roof of my house was bad in that it was leaking and the fact that it was a grass thatched one made the situation worse. When it could rain I could feel worried. I feel great that managed to fixed iron sheets and generally this has made my heart to be at peace. Apart from that, I also bought a solar lantern. My house is lit and the worry of thinking about how to get money to buy paraffine was over. I could use the traditional lamp which was risky in that it could have course fire anytime. The remaining amount was spent on buying six goats. My animals have increased in nu,ber and this has increased my weath.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was previously operating a shop that was not doing well due to inadequate stock and the profit I was getting from it was insufficient. On receiving the transfer, I bought enough stock with the money and now my business is doing well. To me, this is the biggest difference that this transfer has brought into my life as my profits have now increased.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my home that morning as I got prepared in order to go and open my shop. That is when I heard an incoming notification on my phone. On checking it, I was overwhelmed with happiness as the message indicated that I had received the money I had anxiously been waiting for from GiveDirectly. This message gave me hopes of reviving my shop.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I was operating a shop in my village but I had problems of insufficient capital to restock my shop to earn me more profits. On receiving this transfer, I added more stock. My shop now run so smoothly and I am able to serve more customers. I also bought a solar lamp to provide enough lighting in my shop and for security reasons too. I also have plans of expanding it more by providing more services like phone charging. This only means more money for me and a good life for my family. I also bought a new mattress for my kids who were sleeping on rags and beddings that were too old and not healthy for them. They could catch a cold most of the time for lack of proper bedding. I am glad they are now comfortable in their sleep. Business is on my mind, and the remaining amount I am planning to use to start a second-hand clothes business. I want to be more financially stable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my life will economically change for the better. I plan to start a shop business within the village. This will be a reliable source of income for my family because it will provides me a continuous income. I also intend to purchase a pair of oxen and an oxen plough to plough my farm and those of others for fee. This will increase my daily income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is on Sunday mornings when as a family, we prepare to go to church and have time together listening to sermons. This makes me feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of stable source of income. Today, I majorly depend on subsistence farming and casual jobs which are not reliable. Unstable income has made my family to miss some meals and at times not to get enough food.
