How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For the last three years, I have been on and off of hospital due to some illness that I cannot clearly explain. After utilizing the second transfer in the hospital I hope I will be well and once I am discharged, I aim to start a small business even if it will be a shop. Something that will not give me pressure due to the condition I am in. The aim of this is to be able to generate some income to sustain my basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a humanitarian organization that does not discriminate against anyone. I treat all people equally regardless of their conditions and status. This is the reason why I was able to receive the money while in a hospital bed. I am very grateful for the support because if it were not for this selfless and non-discriminative organization, I do not know how my situation would be as of now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This is the third year when I developed leg problems. I have been unable to walk. When I received the second transfer, I was in the hospital and since the money is aimed at helping me, I used all the transfer in paying for my medical bills. Unfortunately, it was insufficient though I am very grateful because it boosted my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Then, I was sleeping in the morning and I heard a message ringtone but I couldn't wake up since I had been bed ridden. When my caregiver came to serve me breakfast, I told her to check and see what the message was all about. I was so happy when she told me that I had received the transfers and I knew that I will now have access to medical care.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I would say sitting upright for the first time in three years was the biggest difference in my daily life. It has been three years of pain and suffering but ever since I started attending clinics after receiving the transfer, I have been relieved the pain. I'm so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I suffered a stroke which left me bedridden three years ago. I have never been able to wake up because the last time we were in hospital, I was recommended for physiotherapy sessions but we couldn't afford the services. My husband who earns living from him driving job wouldn't afford to pay school fees for our four children, provide for us and pay medical bills with the KES 4000 that he earns monthly. I decided to sacrificed my health at the expense of my children's education. My health was deteriorating day by day but we couldn't help it but watch me suffer in pain. When I was enrolled in the program, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel, I knew the transfers would help me access medical care. When I received my first transfer, my husband hired a car which has been taking me for clinics every week and paid for physiotherapy session. It's been a month now and I'm able to sit up. Since we spend all the amount that I had received, I hope the next transfer will play a big role and I'm hopeful that I will be able to walk after spending three years on bed.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In 2020 I started developed some breathing problems which later after some medication it escalated to back pain affecting all the backbone. After several test and scans it was established that I some veins are blocked and that is causing my legs heavy. From that moment I lost my mobility and I could not walk. I have been taking medication and attending clinic every month and that case is very expensive because I have to attend clinic every month and the cost is 9300KES. So this money will help me cater for the cost of having these clinic because imagine I have not attended my clinics for the last three months.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After the condition of my legs were established that I could not move again, I thought my husband would lose hope in me and even not loving me. But am very surprised that every two weeks he comes home and spend time with me encouraging me and showing me the best love. It is that care and concern from him that keeps me happy every day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was diagnosed with spinal cord problem which caused my legs paralyzed. From 2020 up to now, I have been unable to walk making me doing all the things on my bed. I am a very hardworking woman who rarely depended my husband for my personal needs. But now I can not do anything without his support. My mother-in-law is now the one who is washing me and my children. It is very painful but I do not have any option.
