How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Access to education is a right to every child. It is one of the basic needs every child should be granted. None of my kids forced me to sell my small piece of land but since it is my responsibility to ensure they are educated, I had to find all means to ensure they didn't drop out of school. I know it could have rendered us homeless but it is the only option I had. I thank this organization because it is through their help that I managed to retain my land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by giving us unconditional transfers. I was almost selling my land in order to pay for my children. I rely on menial jobs on other people's farms, which could have not been enough to cater for my family's basic needs ad also pay their school fees. Since I get peanuts from my casual jobs, I had no option other than selling my small piece of land. I thank Give Directly for saving me from selling my only asset.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of the money I received to pay school fees for my daughter in the university and her siblings who are in secondary school. I am glad that I was able to clear their fee balance. They will no longer be distracted by being sent home any time soon due to untimely payment of school fees. They will have ample time to study which will guarantee them good results. In addition to that, I also built a house. We now live in a more spacious and comfortable house compared to the one we use to live in previously.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that i will be able to complete paying school fees for my daughter who is in her final year in Laikipia University and my son who is in Secondary school. I will also use part of the money to buy a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time my husband and i arrive home from work. Whenever our children see us arriving home with food, the smiles on their faces brings me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship i have faced in my life is the struggle my husband and i go through in paying school fees for our children. We both engage in casual jobs which are not well paying hence the little money we get has to be distributed to paying school fees as well as providing basic needs for our children.
