How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I used to own ten goats, which were a crucial part of our household because we have never had to buy milk, and whenever emergencies arose, I could sell one. Unfortunately, a disease outbreak claimed four of my goats, leaving me with just six. At least I was able to call a veterinary in time and save the remaining six, which was a relief. Now, my plan is to add five more goats to rebuild my herd. I intend to use my final cash transfer to purchase the new goats and manage them properly, as I am confident that this investment will greatly benefit my family by providing milk and a reliable source of income in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly excels in its approach to enrollment by actively engaging with communities. During the community meetings, officers took the time to explain the program in detail, ensuring that everyone understood the process and its benefits. Although the cash transfers are unconditional, the organization provided valuable education on wise spending, guiding us to avoid using the funds for illegal items like firearms. This emphasis on responsible financial management has enabled recipients to allocate the money effectively toward their diverse needs. I believe that GiveDirectly’s current mode of operation is highly effective, and there are no areas for improvement.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfer, I finally had the chance to invest in my two-acre piece of land that had been lying bare since I inherited it from my parents. For years, I had been unable to cultivate it because I lacked the capital, and the land had become overgrown with prosopis trees. With $250 from the transfer, I hired labor to clear the prosopis trees, and I am now planning to start planting in the next rainy season. In addition, I own another acre of land that I have been cultivating. I used $100 to buy watermelon seeds, as I had already done the plowing and was only waiting for the funds to purchase the seeds and begin planting. I also spent $10 on fertilizer to ensure my crops get a good start. Moreover, my wife is expecting to have our baby this month, and to prepare for this, I prioritized ensuring we have enough food. Since maize is our staple food, I bought three bags for $30 each, knowing that once we have maize, it will be easier to get other food items to sustain us. Thank you, GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in Marigat town, where I usually take vegetables to sell when I suddenly saw a message notification on my phone. To my surprise, it was a message saying I had received money from GiveDirectly. I can't even describe how happy I was at that moment because I had been eagerly waiting for this money to help with my construction plans at home. The timing couldn't have been better. Without wasting any time, I walked straight to the nearest hardware store and paid for all the materials I needed. Then, I headed home, excited to tell my wife about this unexpected blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life right now is that we enjoy meals in a well-lit and airy space on the verandah that I extended from the main house. Before I received the cash from GiveDirectly, my children and I would eat in the sitting room, which was always hot and stuffy. The children often spilled food, making a huge mess, which was embarrassing, especially when we had visitors. Now, with the extra space, we can sit comfortably outside, and the kids have more room to move around without creating such a mess. The verandah has also become a welcoming space for visitors, so I no longer feel embarrassed when people come over. Instead, I'm proud to host them in this new, beautiful part of our home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the cash transfer, the first thing that came to mind was the verandah I had been dreaming of adding to my three-roomed house. With $150, I bought iron sheets, some metals, and roofing nails, all the materials I needed to extend the verandah. It was something I had wanted for a long time, a place where my children and I could sit and enjoy our meals without feeling the intense heat inside the house. The verandah has a half wall, which allows the breeze to flow through, making it comfortable. With $30, I bought a bag of maize, which has been a staple for us. This maize will provide us with enough flour to make meals for several weeks, ensuring that my children go to bed with full stomachs. The final $20 went towards paying the mason who built the verandah extension. Watching the verandah take shape was incredibly satisfying, knowing that every dollar was spent with purpose. Now, we have a place that not only shields us from the sun but also brings us together as a family in a space that feels open, cool, and welcoming.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Receiving this money means I can finally transform my idle land into a productive farm. I plan to allocate KES 25,000 to clear the land, produce charcoal, and reinvest the proceeds into maize farming. Additionally, I have longed to purchase more land, and with KES 75,000 from my transfers, my dream will soon become a reality. I am overjoyed because I foresee a significant improvement in my life in the years to come.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the past six months, I successfully extended my house by adding an extra room. This achievement became feasible after I planted watermelons on a half-acre farm, which yielded KES 50,000 upon selling. With this additional income, my three children and I now comfortably reside in the house, providing us with the privacy we cherish so much.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I own 2 acres of idle land that I am unable to develop due to financial constraints preventing me from clearing the bushes and planting crops for commercial use. It is disheartening not to see the land prosper like my neighbors'. Given the opportunity to invest in commercial agriculture, I would be thrilled to finally realize its potential.
