How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing milk daily is so costly , I wish to save some amount from the sales of my farm produce to purchase a dairy cow. This will enable me to cut the daily cost of buying milk which is so costly for me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Most people invested their transfer in income-generating projects and this has changed their living standards. This is because of the good training that was done before the transfer was sent. That training enlightens the community and made people invest well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the second transfer on purchasing cement, sand and other building materials to cement the floor of my house. We lived in a dusty house and I had always wished to cement it but I did not have the money. We were always being exposed to dust particles and this could cause some respiratory-related diseases that are expensive to cure. I depend on small-scale farming and the produce that I would get was only for consumption I did not have any surplus to sell. We do not have any continuous source of income. I am so happy because now we live comfortably without any worries like before, part of the money I used to pay the workers who did the construction. The remaining part of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 6 am and I had just woken up. I was in the kitchen preparing tea for my family when suddenly I heard my phone ringing. Since I do not know how to read, I took the phone and gave it to my helper to check for me what it was all about. I was so happy and surprised when he happily told me that the SMS that I had received was indicating that I had received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us. I immediately informed my husband about it and we celebrated together giving thanks to God.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer brought into our lives is that we managed to continue with the construction of the house that we had left pending for a while. We are positive that we will be able to finish the construction and remain with some amount that we can spend on other important things.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We decided to spend our recent transfer on cementing the floor of our house that is still under construction but we had left pending for a while due to a lack of money. We had decided to build another house because the ones that we were living in had grown old. We do not have stable sources of income. We depend on the two cows that we usually rear and sell milk when they calve to earn a living. I also usually grow vegetables and sell them to get some income. The money that we make, most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, household items, and helping with the payment of school fees for our four grandchildren. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for making this possible for us with the support that they gave us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We sold 4 of our cows to build a house one year ago but unfortunately, it stalled due to the inadequacy of funds. My husband and I are getting old and we are unable to work to earn some cash. We are glad that our aspirations to accomplish the project will soon be fulfilled through the transfer. We intend to spend the entire transfer to accomplish it and lead a comfortable life. Therefore, receiving this money will relate to an accomplished project.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last 6 months, we relocated to the new house even though it is still under construction. Initially, we used to live in a grass-thatched house that was full of smoke and it was uncomfortable to live in. We feel we are on the verge of fulfilling the desires of our hearts and this is what has brought joy in our lives.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the major challenge we are currently facing. We experienced maize necrosis disease almost 8 years ago which lowered the yields of maize. Additionally, the inadequacy of rainfall in our region worsened the situation. I fear that if the condition persists, our lands will become futile and we may die of starvation.
