How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to restart the grocery business that I had been doing in our village but it collapsed due to lack of enough capital. I intend to sell dry fish, tomatoes, onions and kale. This will be my reliable source of income that will support the family's basic needs like food and kids' educational needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in coming up with the cash transfer program that has improved our quality of life. It was a well-considered idea believing everyone has the opportunity to transform their life according to their wishes with transfers. I do not see anything that they did not do well, I wish them the best of luck as they continue to support the low-income households in society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have desired to improve my agricultural farming so that I would have sufficient food production for the household's consumption. After receiving my recent transfer, I spent $320 to purchase two oxen. I am happy that they will help me in preparing my farm on time something that will ensure my crops mature within the expected time. This is because we are experiencing short rains due to the climate change. Previously, I had to hire oxen from neighbors which made it hard to plough my firm on time leading to low food harvest. In addition, I used $50 to educate my 4 children who are still in primary school by clearing their fee balances. Lastly, I used the remaining amount to purchase sufficient food for my family of 10 members since we did not have food. We were frequently going to bed on empty stomach due to the high costs of foodstuffs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The day could not have ended in a much more better way that day if I do say so myself, especially since the transaction arrived at about nine in the night when I was already in bed. Since I could not decipher the message myself since I am not knowledgeable, my husband read it and confirmed it. It was most definitely a pleasant surprise to say the least.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My children and I finally get to have a proper place to sleep during the night unlike before I received the transaction. We no longer have to sleep in discomfort. My children also got to stay in school and up until now they have yet been kicked out of school ever since I paid their school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the funds, I went to purchase a bed abd two mattresses which accumulated to KES 14,000. My children already had a bed but no mattress since it got worn out meanwhile I had neither and had to use mats on the cold hard ground for almost a year and a half. Prior to receiving thr funds I happened to own two cows but I always wanted to get more so that we could eventually have a herd after they breed and for assistance during farming. That is why I used KES 29,000 and bought two more cows. Furthermore, six of my children had tuition debts and were constantly being sent back home, so I ended up paying KES 7,000 in school fees meanwhile I used the rest of the transfers for meals in my home.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My children are always my priority and making them comfortable brings peace to my mind. When, I receive this money, I will first ensure that they have a comfortable place to sleep. I will buy one bed and three mattresses. The current situation with their bedding is so bad. This will cost me 15,000 KES. I will also do some repairs especially for the roof and complete a structure for my son. This will cost around 25,000 KES. I will then use the rest of the first transfer for their education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the months of October and December last year, I was lucky to be among the few enrolled to a program by Redcross Kenya. I received cash transfers of 5,500 KES in each of the two months which was really a big boost financially. I bought food which lasted for a few months and bought clothes and uniform for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of employment and persistent drought are just a few of the many challenges that I am facing. I have 7 children together with my mother in law who depend on me and my spouse to satisfy their needs. During the rains, things get a bit better because food is affordable. The last time we had meaningful rainfall was 2 years ago. Since then we have not had any harvest. This has made life more and more difficult.
