How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since my daughter will be joining high school next year, I have more on my plate and my goal this year is to save toward school. Because I am a casual worker, I am planning to work as much as I can so that I can save more. Accomplishing my saving goal will mean that my daughter will be able to join high school and she will achieve her academic goal in for years time and later in tertiary institution.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
First, I would like to express my gratitude for the financial support that you gave me. It was my first time handling such amount of money. Thank you for uplifting the less fortunate in the village like me, my life and that of my family has changed and we will always strive to move forward and also change the life of others in future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a peasant farmer and its been hard raising my family with the little that I get from the farm and casual work .As a mother, I was a little bit worried because my daughter will be joining high school next year and having no additional source of income, I knew it would have been a struggle to raise her school fees. I spend $350 of my second transfer to buy a mature dairy cow which will be giving birth towards the end of the year. I spend the balance to buy household items like chairs and utensils because we used to sit on the floor and we barely had utensils.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy and could not believe my eyes that evening after receiving a message from GiveDirectly. I could not help but kept reconfirming that information just to be sure that I had indeed received the first transfer that I had been waiting for. Even though I was alone at home, I celebrated a lot and later called my husband, who was in the nearby shopping center. He was very happy and promised to come home earlier for further planning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the complete change in the face of my household. My family's esteem rose after the significant improvements in the interior part of our house and also the purchase of livestock that put us in the same status as other villagers. I am hopeful that my family will reap from the effort we have put into planning and we will soon have a lot to be thankful for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In my family of six, all my four children are actively attending their schools. The challenge of paying their school fees in time has always pushed us to work extra hard, even though it's sometimes overwhelming. Our spending on the first transfer was strategic in that we have foreseen a future when my elder child will be in secondary school. To ensure that we meet the school fees payment obligation, we saw it good to invest in two heifers worth KES 45000. Even though they are not producing any products yet, I hope that in a year's time, they will provide enough milk to sell, and the proceeds will pay part of the school fees. I am glad that they are both in great health and looking after them is easy since we have enough grazing fields. I also spent the remaining part of the transfer on furnishing the existing house after introducing a new set of chairs at KES 5400, obtained a sack of maize for our foodstuff worth KES 5000, and used the remaining amount in buying clothing for our four children who have always been thankful to GiveDirectly for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I depend mainly on subsistence farming to buy food and pay for my children's education. The amount of money that farming generates is not consistent owing to insufficient rains and the small piece of land that we own. Receiving this money will boost my income because on top of acquiring 0.1 pieces of land with the transfer, I will buy another cow to boost the amount of milk that I get. I will be able to expand my area of farming and this, will in turn increase the income that I get from selling the produce.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the challenge of raising school fees for my children, I am happy that my family has had enough food for the last six months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The inconsistent rainfall and the small piece of land that I farm have made the amount of produce that I get decrease. This has affected the income that I get and settling school arrears for my children difficult.
