How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my focus is to construct a toilet at home. Living in a home that had no toilet is very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I am tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I cannot withstand the shame of taking my visitors to a neighbor's toilet. Based on this, I aim to build one once I get some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, GiveDirectly succeeds by visiting our community and providing aid to the most vulnerable person. Since everyone has the opportunity to choose what they want to buy per their home needs, the notion of sending the unconditional cash transfer was the best. So far, I don't see anything that needs to be adjusted.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The next stage was to buy the remaining supplies and build a house because I had already purchased some building supplies with the first transfer. I purchased the last materials with the aid of my helper after receiving the second transfer, and I built a house. The house I had was crumbling, so I decided to build a new one. I currently live in a two-room house with mud walls and an iron sheet roof. I'm thankful and delighted that GiveDirectly made it possible for me to build a wonderful home. Given that I work as a casual laborer, I am unable to estimate how long it would have taken me to construct such a house. I also bought food for my family with the small amount that was left over.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out in one of the afternoons visiting a relative when I received a message on my phone. Since I could not read and write, I passed the message to a neighbor whom I trust to check for me. Upon checking, she informed me that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was ecstatic and immediately called my son who is in town to inform him of the good news. I left my neighbor for home happily knowing the impact the money was going to have on my life. Being a widow has been the most challenging thing to go about since I solely depend on charcoal burning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am in a well-roofed house not like before. This has restored the joy in my life since I will no longer spend sleepless nights due to the leaking roof. Moreover, I can provide for my basic needs like food without any struggle. All this is courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a widow living alone in the village, my house was old and leaking. Getting this transfer opened a new chapter in my life. With the help of my grandson, I was able to construct a one-room interlocking block house with an iron sheet roof. I cannot tell how much it cost due to illiteracy but I am grateful that I completed the construction. The only remaining part is fixing doors and windows. I am eagerly waiting for the second transfer to complete the fixing. I also set aside some amount for sustenance since I had been relying on casual jobs.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My house! Currently, I live in a small house whose roof is leaking because the iron sheets have worn out and I do not enjoy my nights when it rains. This means my biggest desire is to construct a decent house once I receive this money. I plan to spend utmost $600 to offset the housing problem. On the other hand, I will spend $200 to buy 5 goats which will as act as my investment. The remaining amount will help me to cater to my very basic needs like food and clothing. Hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Very recently, we received some short rains in our area, something that brought joy to me as a farmer. I am now able to plant maize and some cassava which I have high expectations of to help me solve the food insecurity in my household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is basically what I am currently facing. Considering my age of 74 years and also being the only one in the household, I have learned the hard way since I am forced to provide for my basic needs. This has forced me to actively engage in subsistence farming but due to inadequate rains, sometimes I get very little or no harvests. Getting food sometimes lies at the mercy of my good neighbor who provides me food in case I do not have. This explains how much I have become a burden to her and on some days, I usually decide to sleep hungry due to the fear of being mocked by my friends as a beggar. What a sorrowful life!
