How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It has always been my prayer to build a bigger house for my family due to the growing size of my family. I had not been able to achieve this at my own cost due to a lack of finances. Also, my family used to stay hungry most of the time due to overwhelming family needs and inadequate finances. With the transfer, I was able to purchase enough building materials, food and other household necessities that will last us for some time. I am now glad since my family now feeds well as we have enough food in-store.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly directly did well in giving us the transfer to change our living standards. Through the transfer, we were able to build better houses, bought some assets and paid school fees for our children. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my second transfer, I spent some amount to buy a heifer. I decided on this so that when it reproduces, I will be using the income from milk sales to pay school fees for my children. This is an asset to me that signifies a sense of pride and wealth in our community. Also, I bought some iron sheets to use in building a spacious house for my family and a granary. The house we are living in is small and cannot accommodate us comfortably hence a need for a bigger house. I still have some amount that I am planning to use to commence building a house for us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Financial indepencence is what this money means to me. My first priority is to buy a friessian dairy cow at ksh 45000 that will be my source of income upon selling milk daily hence the struggle of engaging in tedious casual jobs at my old age will come to an end. Practising poultry farming is my second plan upon receiving my second transfer. Selling poultry products will help supplement the income from selling milk hence improving my living standards. I will then build up savings from both projects that will latter enable me to construct a more spacious and comfortable house and also pay school fees for my two children, one in the university and another one in secondary school
What is the happiest part of your day?
After spending my day engaging in tedious casual jobs in order to earn a living, coming back home in the evening to take a rest as i plan on what to do the following day makes this the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of support from my spouse in fulfilling the needs of my children has been the biggest challenge i face in life. He is a mechanic but due to his alcoholic nature, he ceased giving me an helping hand in educating our children. Since our land is no longer productive due to drought, crop pests and diseases, i have been forced to search for casual jobsin people's farms, very tedious jobs that i have to do no matter the challenges
