How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to enrol myself in a tailoring college in the coming year on our nearby town. My long-term goal is to start a dressmaking shop which will be my reliable source of livelihood for the family. This will aid in leaving the charcoal vending job which is laborious and led to the loss of forest cover resulting in climate change.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give directly did well in coming to our area and offering help by enrolling poor households. Through the transfer, a lot of transformation has happened in our area. I think there is nothing they could do better than continue to support the less fortunate individuals in society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on charcoal burning as a reliable source of livelihood for the family. This activity is very tiresome and has low returns. Additionally, the government is against it because it leads to deforestation leading to climate change. I had desired to start goat rearing as an alternative source of income. I invested $125 to purchase 5goats. Additionally, I used part of the remaining amount to construct a two-roomed, mud-walled rental house at our nearby market center. Currently, I am happy that I earn $20 per month from the rental. This income is of great help in educating our 2 kids and providing food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 in the morning when I was from the dam when I saw a message notification on my mobile phone. I was so curious and without hesitating, I decided to check where the message was from and the sender of the message as well. Upon reading them, I realized that it was a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, they had debited my first KES 55000 which I has been promised earlier on during the enrolment period. I was overwhelmed with joy knowing that I will be able to build the rental house that I have been yearning to have for years.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the financial support has empowered me to construct a very beautiful spacious rental house. It has always been my wish to own t but I did not have enough resources to construct it. For all those years I have been jobless and I only relied on n my spouse to cater to all our basic needs. Having a family of five, the little he could earn KES 150 in a good day was barely enough. As a result, my children were always on and off in school because of the accumulated fees and there are also times that we had to skip meals because we had no money to buy food. Therefore I had to think of a perfect project that will bring all the financial hardships to an end. I am now grateful that very soon I start earning and hopefully I have good returns from it. Through this, I do believe that my children will no longer be sent home for fees and I will be able to cater to all the household expenses with ease.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my forst more trans on buying a piece of land ( a half an acre) at KES 20000. I have been dreaming to purchase it for quite a long time but becasue of the financial hardships, this was not achievable. Also, I bought some building materials such as the building poles at KES 10000, iron sheets at 10000, and all the labor charges at KES 5000. I bought all these with an aim of constructing a new rental house and generating some income. In addition, I bought three goats at a total cost of KES 9000 I am glad at least I now have the living assets that I can always rely on. In addition to that, I cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my daughter who is in primary and she's now studying peacefully without any challenge. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for the family and cater for some other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I own a small piece of land adjacent to the shopping center which I have always wanted to build a shop and start a business. Receiving this money means that I can now do that comfortably. My plan is using KES 30,000 to construct the shop and another KES 30,000 to stock the shop. The retail shop will be an investment which will help me earn money without straining a lot like I do with the charcoal business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a one month old daughter whom I gave birth without any complication. Furthermore she is healthy and I really thank God for that. That is what has recently brought joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having an unreliable source of income is my current challenge. I currently do charcoal business against my will because there is no other option. There are no jobs available and to make matters worse, there is drought. Getting a meal for the day has been difficult because there is no money to purchase the food. Apart from food, my children need other basic needs like clothes and school fees too.
