Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I would be lying if I said that I was not happy when I received the money. It came when my husband and I were at home. For a while, we had been under financial constraints that made it hard to fend for our three children. So, when I saw that I had received the funds from give directly, this spelled out the beginning of my journey to some financial freedom. To reduce the pressure my husband had about the motorcycle he bought on hire purchase, we cleared the debt and I also got to start a mini-market business.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before I started receiving funds from give directly, we struggled financially, and meeting the needs of my three children was quite a challenge. I also had projects I wished I could do but every time I came up with one, I had to postpone it as I didn't have the finances to facilitate it. After receiving the funds, I started a business. Even though it's still picking up, I make a daily profit of KES 1000 which I know will soon improve and I could also fund the business idea I might have. I then got to clear the debt my husband had from the motorcycle he bought on hire purchase.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For the longest time, I desired to be financially independent. This is so I could contribute toward providing for our three children. However, the challenge was that I neither had the capital nor was I successful in my job search. My husband, who works as a motorcyclist, had bought a motorcycle through hire-purchase. He consistently made daily payments and at the time of the receipt of my transfer, he had only remained with KES 45,000 to finalize his payments. To ease the burden of debt, I settled it and used the amount that remained to open a convenience store.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have longed to start a kiosk in my village so that it can keep me engaged as I am a housewife and I am always at home and I feel I am wasting a lot of my time but I have not been able to start the kiosk as I am lacking capital. Receiving this money means owning a kiosk. I will use 20,000 KES to build a structure as well as tailor-making it to suit a kiosk design and use 10,000 KES to buy stock. I will use the remaining amount to buy goats and food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, February, of 2022 I had a successful normal delivery at Palakumi dispensary. I gave birth to a bouncing baby girl.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife and I feel like I am not exploiting my business abilities to my fullest as I am always at home doing only the house chores which I only take three hours to complete and I spend the rest of the day relaxing.
