How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to save the money to pay school fees for my daughter is yet to join high school next year. I rely on horticultural farming where by I plant three months of crops like vegetables. I sell the produce at the market to earn some money. I wish to see her complete her studies.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in that it has enabled most of the people who lived in small houses to build better and more spacious houses. The majority were able to pay the school fees for their children in various schools. I do not find anything that GiveDiectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 on purchasing building materials and building a better and decent house. We lived in a small old house that was constructed over thirty years ago. The house was almost falling down. I had always wished to build a better house but I did not have the money. When I received the money I felt so happy because that was the opportunity to purchase all the materials. Currently, we live in a decent and more spacious house with my family. I spent $20 on paying school fees for my daughter who is in primary school. She is now studying well and ready to sit for the final exams before the year ends. The remaining amount of money I spent on plowing my farm and purchasing seeds. I was able to plant at the right season and we hope to get a good harvest this season. I am so great full for the support because GiveDiercly has changed our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8 Am when I was taking my breakfast when I heard a message notification tone from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. We sat down with my family and planned on how to spend the transfer. After we agreed I withdrew the money the following day. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a heifer is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I always purchase milk daily and it's so costly for me. I do not have a continuous source of income, I depend on small casual jobs and farming. These two sources of income earn me a small income and This is for school fees and the food basic needs of my family. I had always wished to purchase a dairy cow but I did not have the money. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and the priority was to invest in the dairy cow. Currently, I have a heifer and I know in the next few months when it reproduces I will get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus milk to earn an income. I save the money for the school fees for my children. I have devoted much of my time to dairy farming and it has given me hope to invest more. My life has changed and I wish to improve this and make it the main source of income for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 27,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk for my family when it reproduces in the next few months. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I spend part of the money on plowing my farm ready for planting., I paid school fees for my daughter in primary school and the remaining amount I spend on food and household items. GiveDirectly has improved our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently I take care of my sick husband, two daughters and my four months old grandchildren. Life has been really hard since the little amount I get from milk sells are channeled to cater for my husband's medical bill. This makes me unable to buy food in my household. I have been thinking of buying another dairy cow worth KES 40000 to increase milk productivity which inturn increase my daily income. I am much optimistic that my husband will soon be back to his feets.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In January, I harvested 2 bags of maize which really helped me cater for food expenses. I am glad that since then my family has never starved.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband's monthly medical expenses of KES 10000 is high and my elder daughter is jobless. These makes life really hard mostly now that the food prices are hicked. The situation is much surdening.
