Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My greatest desire was to build a decent house. This is why I gave it the first priority when I first got my transfers. Initially, raising enough amount to build a house was very difficult. I am a businessman, I collect and sell firewood. The little money that I was earning from this business was not enough to do a big project like building a house. I could only manage to cater for the daily basic needs such as food. I was left with nothing to save to do a meaningful project such as constructing a permanent house. I thank GiveDirectly for their financial support. The transfers enabled me to purchase enough building materials. I bought iron sheets and building poles. Without their support, I couldn't have built the house I am living in currently. It is a decent iron-roofed house that is spacious enough. According to me, the house is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the transfer message early that morning as I was preparing to go to my casual job site. When I checked the message, I realized that it was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first transfer. I was greatly overjoyed. It really came as a surprise and I couldn't contain my joy. I was now hopeful that I would now fulfil my greatest goal of building a decent house.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my transfer on buying building materials. I am planning to build a new house because my previous house was in a very bad condition. Immediately I received the first transfer, I purchased the materials and I am now in the process of building a decent one. At least I will now have a decent house for my family. In addition to this, I also purchased two heifers which I am currently rearing in my homestead. My expectation is that these heifers will reproduce when they mature. I will be getting milk for my family's consumption and even sell the surplus and earn an income. I spent the remaining amount to purchase a few household needs such buying foodstuffs and also paying for my daily household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have never been able to construct a decent shelter for my family. My desire has been to have one but this has never materialized due to poverty condition that I have experienced for long. The house I am currently living in is very small, leaking with a polythene rooftop something that has forced me to spend sleepless night especial at this time when we are receiving long rains in our area. Receiving this money means a decent house for my family as I am planning to spend $300 in building one. I will use the remaining amount to start a small food outlet in the nearby town centre.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day because I usually come home from the bush with the poles I have cut for sell. I spend this period to rest my body after a long day of work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship I am facing in my life. In 2018, I used to operate a joined food outlet with my brother but it collapsed due to family conflicts. I have wished to restart one of my own but I have not been able to fulfill this because of lack of starting capital. This has forced me to dwell on selling poles to my potential neighbours in order to get income to feed my family.
