How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently I do not have a clear goal that I set to accomplish once I get money. This is because, my trend has been planning for something at hand. Putting that into consideration, I will develop a defined plan on what do if I get the money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is a hand-holding organization that helps the less privileged. I can attest the help that I received from the organization and if it were not for it, then I do not know how my child would be as of now. When I got the first transfer, my child had been involved in a road accident and the doctors had requested for a head surgery. That transfer helped me greatly and as of now my child id doing well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving and withdrawing the money, I bought a modern bed and a mattress on the very day before returning home. This is because the bed I had was the traditional one tied with ropes and the ropes were worn-out. Both the mattress and the bed cost KES 9200.00. Thereafter, I bought construction materials for building a new house since the one I had was a grass-thatched and it was also leaking. I bought poles, rafters, nails and 20 iron sheets. The prices for these materials I cannot recall them.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 in the evening when we had just finished taking our supper when I saw the message notification. I was a bit shocked and nervous since it was so rare for me to receive any messages at such an hour. However, since I am illiterate, I asked my daughter to check where the texts were from. upon reading them, she realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally received my first KES 55000. I felt so happy and as a family, this felt like a blessing to us. Also, I knew I will finally be able to clear the hospital bills for my son who was admitted.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Clearing the hospital bill for my son who was admitted has brought so much joy and the biggest change in my daily life. Being the last wife in a polygamous marriage has been so tough on my end. My spouse is very old and therefore I had to step in as the family breadwinner of six children. I have been depending on the charcoals business because was not that lucrative since in a day I could make a total profit of KES 100, this would mean that catering for the family's needs and settling the huge hospital bill would take ages. I had been pleading for help in the government offices and even the community but in vain. This issue has been frustrating me from the day he was admitted since I knew very well I would be able to afford the money needed. However, I was always hopeful and God was in control. I am so happy and thankful to GiveDirectly for coming into my life at the time I needed their help the most. My son is now healthy and he is even at school. I wouldn't have done all these it was not for the financial support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer on clearing the hospital bill for my son who was involved in a tragic road accident that had occurred a few months ago. I am so happy that for now, he is faring so well he even resumed his studies. I also bought a new wooden bed and a mattress at a total of KES 10000. I had to replace the traditional bedding that I have been using for all those years since I was experiencing back pains. Also, I bought new clothes for the Christmas celebrations for my kids and this will forever be their memorable one. In addition, I cleared school fees of KES 1500 for my two children who are in primary schools. To add to that, I bought a solar panel which is now helping us at night and charging our phones as well. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means restoring the dignity that I have lost for a long time. This is because I have been sharing a small house with my children for long. My plan is to use KES 55000 to construct a separate structure for me and my spouse and leave the old one for my children. I will further spend KES 20000 to buy a bed and mattress to avoid the cold floor. With the remaining amount, I will buy 10 goats that will act as a long term investment project for my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I will be lying to say that I am happy. However, the fact that I sleep and wake up when healthy of body and sound, that's makes me joyous.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarity of food and water is the current challenge that I am facing. This is due to the ravaging of drought that we are experiencing in our area, all the water pan that we were relying on has dried up. I buy 3 of 20 liters jerricans of water daily that cost me KES 150. This is very costly to me since I have to buy food for my family of eight daily. With most of the money going on buying food and water, paying school fees is now a problem for me. I am the sole breadwinner since my spouse is very old and cannot work anymore.
