How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would love to complete my house in the not so distant future. We are currently in a one bedroom house, and I would love to expand it and make sure we all fit comfortably. While at it, I've set my eyes on getting two dairy cows that I can use as a source of income to provide for my kids and myself. These would ensure some more financial stability moving forward.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am always left in awe of how well GiveDirectly follows up on their recipients. The fact that they desire to know how one used the funds and do so without judgement or requirements is beyond me. May they always continue to do good and be a blessing to those in need. I would ask that they increase the number of recipients as there are so many within our borders in need of help, critically!.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The bulk of my funds, received from GiveDirectly, went to catering for school fees for my kids. I am a mother of 9, 5 of whom are in school still. My 4 eldest are all adults, married and with kids. My 5th is in Palakumi secondary and in form 4, my 6th just completed school last year, my 7th born is also in Palakumi School - form 1, my 8th born is in Grade 6 at Muungano school in Mariakani where she lives with my sister and my last born is in Grade 3 at Bodoi Primary. Their fees amount to KES. 10,000 and KES 1,200 per term, respectively for those in school, and the funds were allocated as needed towards their tuitions. Running my Posho milll at Palakumi trading centre, while tilling my farm where I live, I have been trying to struggle to provide for my family, and the funds from GiveDirectly were the blessing I had been awaiting. They truly have changed our lives for the better.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a village leader, I was at a seminar concerning community health conducted in our village. I was busy that I did not bother checking the phone. I learned about the receipt of the transfer when I returned home at around 5 pm. I was very grateful and happy for receiving my transfer which would transform my life for the better. This is because we had planned to use the transfer with my family and members wisely.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I can comfortably support the educational needs of my kids. Previously, I had lost confidence and was demoralized that my kids will not be able to complete their studies because of the huge fee balances. In addition, I am optimistic that I will finally occupy a proper house once I complete the construction.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10,500 of the recent transfer to pay part of the school fees for my two children who are in secondary school. With One being in form 4 and the other one in form 1. They had a huge fee balance that made them constantly sent home something that affected their performance negatively. In addition, I bought 24 iron sheets for KES 22,000 and building poles. This was for the construction of a new house for the family since the one I had earlier was a small, grass-thatched house which was not enough to accommodate both my family member and our house properties. This forced some of them to seek shelter from our neighbors. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring sufficient food for my family of 9 members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Am working as a livestock herder, where I depend on milking my cows to sell to my neighbors and on a good day I earn around 300 KSH which I use to provide basic needs for my family members. I also have two children in secondary school and third one cleared class eight and is about to join form one. All those depend on my milk business. Upon receiving the first transfer of 55,000 KSH I plan to pay their school fees which is a debt amounting to 35000 KSH. I plan to use the rest of the transfer to pay school fees for the second term and do shopping for my daughter who is about to join secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son is a mason and he finished building his house, and has plans to start building my new house and this makes me so happy that he cares about me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Educating my children has been the greatest challenge, two of them are in secondary school and in a year it runs to almost 60,000 KSH. We applied for bursaries but the money disbursed is very small, it makes me sad to imagine if my children will ever finish school, because they are always absent and from the end term reports, they have shown poor performance. My hope is give directly will at least help me overcome the struggles through getting both transfers and plan for them accordingly.
