What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $300 to gather for my medical expenses including the entire first transfer. I got it involved in a grisly road accident that to almost claimed my life in the year 2020. It became difficult for me to easily until I had to use a wheelchair. I am so happy and grateful at the same time that this money has really helped us as a family.I can see tremendous progress in my recovery journey-something that would not have happened had I not received a transfer from GiveDirectly. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does very well by giving support in n form of cash. Looking at the things that I have done from money gives me so much joy. We were staying in a very small house that had leaking roof.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My home is situated close to the road- main road fir that matter. This road offers a great opportunity for me to improve the living standards of my family as well as my own. My new goal is to start a poultry keeping business where I will be selling eggs to a nearby market at a good price. I also have a goal of constructing a shop next to the roadside where I have access to many potential customers. I was involved in an accident in the year 2020 and I got so much incapacitated from that accident. I was forced to use wheelchair since I could not move and this made me almost dispair in life. A lot of money was required in hospital for my condition to be corrected. I could not raise enough of this money until I received money from GiveDirectly. I am now very happy having received the cash and gone to hospital, my situation has changed and I can at least move from one place to the other. Shop keeping business as well as poultry keeping may not be that demanding and I can easily manage them from home. I would not have thought of this had I not received money from GiveDirectly. With this business , I will be able to actively support my wife who has taken up the responsibility of providing for the family since the time I was involved in an accident. Our children shall be in a position to enjoy better living standards through this.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on seeking better medical attention. I was involve in road accident and I injured my had and leg. I underwent serious surgery which was so expensive. I had to visit the hospital weekly for check up and this was so costly. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and purchase iron sheets planning to build a better and spacious house when I received the second transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to get money for medication is the biggest difference in my daily life. I am so grateful for the support because I received the transfer when I was undergoing treatment. I was involved in road accident and I almost lost my life. It was so terrible and it changed my life completely. I used to walk and do my daily activities without stress. Currently my leg is paralyzed and my had as well. This has change my life completely since I no longer work. When I received the transfer I felt so happy. I was able to get the money for medication and check up. Currently I am doing good and I have hope that one day I will walk again. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard to be much better than before. I have the money for transport to see the doctor. I no longer borrow from neighbors and Friends.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm I was just at home relaxing. I heard a message notification from my phone. When I check it out I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I needed the money a gently. I got an accident some times back and I need serious medical attention and check up. I am so grateful for the support because I was able to get the medication and now I'm feeling better.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Before getting involved in a road accident in the year 2021 I used to lead a happy and fulfilling life; I could walk, work on my farm and accomplish household tasks comfortably. Currently, I struggle a lot to do the same since I am partially paralyzed. I feel stressed and disturbed to lead this horrific life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Obtaining an NHIF (National Hospital Insurance Fund) card has been the main source of happiness for me. After getting involved in an accident, I had to seek for financial support from well-wishers to raise funds for footing the hospital bill. If I had the NHIF card, it could have been easier for me to get the treatment without relying on other people.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
In the year 2021, I was involved in a terrible road accident that left me paralyzed and disabled. I fractured my right leg while my left hand was dislodged. Subsequently, my wife fled with our two children after learning that I cannot effectively accomplish my roles as usual. Upon receipt of the first treatment, I was asked to revisit the hospital about a year ago. Unfortunately, I have never revisited the hospital due to an absence of funds. As such, I feel blessed and happy on receiving this money since it suggests that I will afford to revisit the hospital, get treated, and hopefully be healed. Thank you GiveDirectly.
