How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I received my first and second transfer, I used it to build a new house for my family. For a long time, I had had the desire to build a bigger and better house than the one that we lived in. This dream had always been postponed because of the little money that I made from my small scale farming and dairy keeping. Paying school fees for my children and buying food for family had remained to be my first priority. The proceeds from dairy keeping that amounted to $30 was just enough to feed my family and meet other small needs like gathering for their education needs. When I received this transfer, I thought it was a perfect opportunity for me to build a new house. I used the first transfer to buy 41 pieces of iron sheets and the second transfer was used to buy building poles and to pay for labour. I now have a new goal of cementing the floor of my house. This I know will require huge resources but all I can do is wait until I have enough money to do it. I am taking part in a savings plan through monthly merry go round contributions and this is what will help me achieve this goal. I am very hopeful that I shall be able to do this by end of next year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does very well giving very clear communications during enrollment. The fact that they give cash as a form of aid is also a very good thing worth mentioning. Different people have different needs and once somebody gets money, they are in a position to make informed decisions on what to spend the money on. On the other hand, I do not find anything that I think GiveDirectly should improve on or should do better. Everything they do is perfect according to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
All my entire transfers were used to build a new house. For a long time, I had this desire of building a bigger and better house but with the little income that I received from farming, I could only buy food and meet various education needs for my children. I had all along been unable to save enough money that would be enough to build a better house and when I finally received a transfer from GiveDirectly, I think bought it was a perfect opportunity to build one. I used my first transfer to buy pieces of iron sheets and used the second transfer to buy other building materials and to meet the labour costs. I am very delighted on where I have reached with this project by and looking forward to completing it soon enough. only buy foo used all my entire transfer to build a new house. The second one in particular was used to buy building poles and to pay causuals who helped in putting it up. I am so happy that we now have a bigger and better house from the one that we owned before. We were living in a very small house that would not give us the much needed comfort. We would not be in a position to host visitors comfortably but we now can.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received a message from GiveDirectly, I was very so happy that I had to inform my family that was very excited as well. I could not withdraw immediately, but aligned with the plans we had in place with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the huge spending on the construction of a new house for my family of five. This is a significant step for my family members who had been fighting for the small space in the current house. I am glad that we will soon get more rooms that accommodate everyone and also visitors whenever they visit.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been living with my family of five in a single house I had always felt was too small for us. On receiving the first transfer, I spent KES 37000 on buying 41 iron sheets I am currently using in the construction of a new house for my family. I also paid the labor charges to the constructor worth KES 10000 and even though the construction is not complete, I hope that the doors and the completion of the floors will soon be done when I receive the second transfer. I also spent the remaining amount on buying other construction materials, including nails and building poles. I am grateful for the great transformation I have witnessed in the past few weeks and hopeful to do a lot more in the future.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money is an encouragement and inspiration to my efforts to prosper despite the fact that age has caught up with me. The uplifting that GiveDirectly has done collectively to households in this region has made determined progress in opening up the economy over the past 3 years. I am a shopkeeper in town I have already felt the economic impact that these transfers have done to the people. It has been able to sustain my business despite the hard economic times that other shopkeepers from other towns in this region were not able to endure. It is like a bonus to me to get these transfers and we would like to open up our business to start doing wholesale distribution of household goods to small kiosks that do retail business in various villages. We will buy a motorcycle with these transfers to enable us achieve this dream.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I managed to start the foundation for a new house and this gave me a lot of happiness because I will finally have a new house after living in the current one for the last three decades.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I face many significant challenges, especially in my business where I understand that I could make more money through the incorporation of modern technology into the business but it is quite expensive to do that. I have also been seeing a possibility of making huge profits through the delivery of shopping items to customers but it has been challenging to do it because of the poor cellphone network coverage here.
