How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been becasue I have been able to chive a lot through the transfers. I am now sleeping comfortably in a better house whereby initially, I used to shelter under a pathetic place. I have been seeking shelter from one house to the other for so many years, which was at time embarrassing. I had missed the joy of sleeping under one roof with my whole family for so long and I never imagine this would happen anytime soon. Also, the piece of land that won has been made e proud and at least I can mention I have an asset that my children can depend on even in future. I wouldn't have achieved this if it ere fir my own coach, I will forever be grateful to GiveDirectly
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly has does well by bringing an extreme change into our lives. In my village, everyone lived a poverty life and the financial support means a lot to us. The majority of us now have decent houses whereby previously, we used to shelter under leaky grass-thatched houses. Also, every household now has numerous livestock and we have been able to send our children to school through this support. Therefore I do not see any part GiveDirectly need to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a piece of land becasue the previous one was a family could. this has been my long time dream to own it because I have a small farm and I had to lease from my neighbours so that I can get meaningful harvests. Also, I bought some building materials which include pieces of sheets, timber, building poles and nails. This was for the construction of a brand new house because the previous one was small with a weak roof. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough food for my family and nice clothes

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning when I heard my neighbours praising and shouting that GiveDirectly had sent the transfers they had promised. Since I could not comprehend the messages on my phone, I called for my helper who confirmed to me that I had received my first transfer. I joined my neighbours in thanking GiveDirectly, full of joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly visited me, I was staying in a small ,shanty and poorly constructed house. I had no plans of building a decent house since I have been struggling financially for many years. However, upon receiving the transfer, I decided to buy enough building materials which include iron sheets and building poles in order to construct a decent house. This to me makes it to be the biggest difference because in my daily life. I had tried to build at my own cost but I failed due to lack of financial resources. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for helping me achieve this dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials which include iron sheets, poles and nails to construct a new house. The house that has been my shelter for many years is in a bad state. Its roof is dilapidated and leaking when it rains. I have not been able to renovate it due to some financial problems. The little income from casual jobs is not enough to facilitate this. I thank GiveDirectly for enabling me to construct a decent house for my family. In addition to this, I also bought a heifer which I am currently keeping as an asset for my family. I am expecting it to reproduce and sell the offspring in case of a financial need.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will finally fulfil my dream of owning a decent shelter for my family. Currently, I am living in a small grass roofed house which requires maintenance every year. I am intending to spend $ 180 to build one-roomed iron roofed house. Also, I will used the remaining amount to start goats rearing which will be my reliable source of income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is the happiest part of my day unlike the mornings when I am busy with charcoal preparation I always find ample time to relax after finalizing my work. I get to meet my grandchildren and I chat with them under a shade while eating lunch, being around them give me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of capital to start my alternative source of income of goats rearing to replace the laborious, hard and low paying charcoal vending job has been my biggest hardship. This job has brought my a lot of healthy problems as I always have chest problem after doing this job.
