How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in very many ways than it would have been in case I did not receive the GiveDirectly transfers. We now have a parcel of land that was made possible by the transfers and a new house for the family. Very often, we could only get enough money to sustain the family and meet other recurrent expenditures but we were unable to accumulate enough money to buy land. The dream of buying land was actualized when we met this buyer who was willing to get the payment in bits and we were confident to finish paying for it with GiveDirectly transfers. My family is generally happier than it has ever been and we are grateful for this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did so well by giving us all the money that they promised to. They not only did this but they did it in time. I never believed that I will get all the transfers as they promised to give us. The fact that the money was also unconditional went down well with me. This gave me an opportunity to choose anything I wanted to do with the money without the fear of having to worry about being taken into account. On the other hand I did not see any shortcomings with GiveDirectly organisation.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I got my first transfer, I left it saved in my MPESA account until I received my second transfer. This was to allow me accumulate enough money to clear a pending debt on a piece of land that my husband and I bought for the family. We had always looked forward to owning our own piece of land. The one that we were staying in was so small and we felt we were crowded with the rest of the family. We now feel happy that we have been able to buy this land and build a new house as well. This is greatly attributed to the GiveDirectly transfers that we received and we shall forever be grateful for this.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to own an extra cow. I have been desiring to increase the number of livestock and increase milk production which will help me cater for my family needs such as food, School fees and other household expenses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is during the day when all the children have gone to School. This is the only free time I have to do other household chores since there is minimal or no disturbance from them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is lack of capital to start my own business. My intention since I got married is to run a business of buying and selling cerials. Even though we normally get money from our routine casual work, it is hardly enough to start a business due to dynamic expenses at home.
