How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The difference is that I am now hopeful of living in my own home. Through the transfers I got from Give Directly I have already bought the necessary building materials. Initially, I only used to depend on casual jobs. The money I got from these jobs was enough to buy basic needs. I used to save nothing towards this goal therefore there were slim chances of establishing my home. I am happy that soon I will be living with my family in our own homestead.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the fact that the grant issued by Give Directly is unconditional makes it so unique. One can use the money how best they feel without restrictions and again as I have said it is a grant hence you owe no one.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I did spend my recent transfers to purchase building materials to help me construct my house. I used to do casual jobs and I was not able to save enough for construction purposes but I am grateful to GD's support that I can now have a dream of constructing my family house.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having goats in my homestead has changed my life in different ways. I have now started a business selling the offsprings once they are mature enough. Before the coming of GiveDirectly into my village, I was living in a miserable life. But since they came there has been a great change. Whenever I have a problem or an emergency, I always sell one or two goats and sort whatever issue that was bothering me. Secondly, my children will no longer be sent home for fees because I now have the means to pay time. from the business of selling the offsprings. This alone makes my life better compared to when I only depended on casual jobs
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 am when I was from the washroom, then I heard my phone ringing. I was nervous since it was so unusual for my phone to ring at such an hour, I then decided to check who had sent the message, only to realize it was an mpesa message from GD, I was so excited and I couldn't sleep till dawn.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, and timber. This was purposely for constructions of a new house. Previously I used to sleep under a small house with my two children, and I am a single parent and jobless I could not afford to construct one. I also paid the mason as his labor fee. I also bought some goats as one of my assets. I had to buy them because they mature faster compared to any other domestic animals. I then cleared school fees for my children since they had a huge fee balance. I then bought some household items such as a plastic tank, plastic, chairs and many more. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and I.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. At the moment we are living in a. Small, leaking and almost open grass-thatched house. Especially at this time when our village receives long rains we are spending sleepless nights moving our beds from one corner to the other. The arrival of Gd in my village has renewed my joy as my desire of owning a decent house for my family will come to materialize as I am planning to spend $250 to construct a good one. The remaining amount will help me to purchase goats that I will use to educate my children when they reproduce.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is the happiest part of my day unlike the mornings and evenings when I am busy preparing charcoal for sell.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Spending sleepless nights due to the bad condition of my house has been the biggest challenge in my life. I have wished to have a good house but due to financial instability, I have never accomplished my desire. Being the only breadwinner for my family of 5, I am totally relying on charcoal burning activity which earns me 3 dollars per day. This income simply means food to my family leaving no coin for the other needs, resulting in my children drop out of school. Therefore financial instability is my biggest hardship in life.
