How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
GiveDirectly has empowered me financially and broadened my way of thinking and positively seeing things. I intend to set up a business in future. The plan is to save up money daily for my Boda Boda business to realise this goal. I am optimistic and determined that in no time it should be up and running.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is in helping the less fortunate in society by giving them funds unconditionally for them to elevate their living standards. I have not witnessed or seen anything that was not done well therefore, I am satisfied with how GiveDirectly conducts its work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Owning a cow has been among the goals that I had set initially that I would wish to achieve. This is because I have been buying milk daily for our daily usage. I am a Boda Boda taxi rider, married with two children. The cost of buying milk daily was very expensive yet I did not have any reliable source of income. Therefore I opted to buy a dairy cow with my second transfer where I used KES 35,000. I then used the remaining amount on buying foodstuffs and clothes. IT makes me happy, grateful and relieved that buying milk daily is now a story of the past.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes to 4 pm when I heard a message alert on my phone and at the same time, the client I was carrying informed me that there were rumors that GiveDirectly had started sending the promised money to people. As my norm, I did not bother with the message since I do not like using my phone while driving since I am a motorcycle rider. I became so happy the moment I read its contents after dropping my client at his destination. Since my spouse does not have a phone that I would have used to communicate with her, I continued with my work jovially as I waited patiently till I get home so that I would share the good news with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
With the transfer, I have been able to start building a room that I will use for a shop business. This has been my dream goal for the last five years but I had not been able to even start buying some building materials due to lack of money. I am glad that I will soon achieve this goal and I believe that this business will thrive well since I live in a place where shops are far apart and one has to walk for a long distance to get to the nearest. My spouse will run this business since she is currently a housewife and this will enable her to help me with some of our bills.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I use my motorcycle to offer taxi services to people in my locality and for the past five years, it had always been my dream to start a business for my wife so that she would be in a position to help me in paying for our bills. We live near the main road and one has to walk for a long distance to get to the nearest shop. This was my ideal kind of business since we are strategically located in a place that will attract more customers. I had not been able to achieve this due to financial constraints and I am happy that the transfer gave me a perfect opportunity to take a step towards this. I spent KES 40000 from it to purchase all the building materials except cement and paid for the labor of constructing a room that I will use as a shop and I still have KES 7000 that I will use in buying the cement. I used the remaining amount on food that will still last us fr some days and clothes for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been thinking of starting a maize milling enterprise but it has been in vain due to financial challenges. I usually earn a profit of KES 300 daily from my casual job which does not support my idea of venturing into maize milling enterprise. When I receive this money I will plan KES 90000 to buy a posho mill machine and jumpstart this business. This will enable me to boost my family income and have a better life. With the remaining money, I will support the education of my wife by paying her secondary school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Raising KES 90000 is not a walk in the park now that I do not have a stable income. This has made my dream of starting a maize milling enterprise in vain. When I heard that GiveDirectly is coming to enroll in our village I was moved with joy and happiness. I saw my door of success opening up and my dream coming to reality.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I work on motorbike transport service to earn a living. This industry is becoming challenging as many people are now venturing into it. I used to earn up to KES 500 daily but now I am earning about KES 200 daily. This is making me struggle financially.
